Job Summary
Participates with the Health Care Team in delivering quality and customer focused health care to patients in a manner that reflects Kaiser Permanente mission, vision and values. As appropriate to the position scope of authorized duties the Perioperative Assistant is expected to have critical thinking skills, attention to detail, time management, problem solving and customer relations skills in a fast paced environment in order to meet patient needs and contribute to the positive care experience and work environment.
EssentialResponsibilities
- Interacts with various departments within and outside of Kaiser Permanente to facilitate the coordination of care for perioperative patients. Ensures confidentiality of all patient and organization records and information. Orders materials and supplies for unit. Supports Unit/Dept. down time procedure when needed. May assist in transport of pre-operative and post-operative patients and their belongings within Surgical Services. Provide assistance to clinical staff in the transfer of patients between the operating room table and stretcher/bed as needed.
Assist physician and clinical staff in the positioning of patient as directed. Transport OR case cart from clean elevator to assigned room as needed. Transport dirty case cart after surgery to Central Sterile Processing by dirty elevator. Place trash, linen and biohazard material in appropriate containers. Transport equipment needing repair to appropriate location (eg: Biomed etc.) Fill out necessary paperwork.
Transport specimens to lab as requested, maintain appropriate log record. Assist with OR room turnover between cases. Wipe down all OR equipment (OR furniture, fixtures, equipment) with attention to floors per protocol. Clean any equipment leaving OR room and return to storage area. Maintain, clean and stock restricted and semi-restricted corridor areas, sink scrub area and OR sterile core. Restock warmers and linen as needed in OR rooms.
Under the direction of the surgical team, gather equipment and supplies as needed. Submit Easy Net requests as needed for department repairs per protocol. - Communicates and coordinates with other Units/Depts. as needed.
- Performs appropriate daily activities to start workflow per team agreements and procedures. Demonstrates flexibility and ability to effectively reprioritize workflow to handle urgent/emergent demands of the team. Reports errors, near misses or other hazards in a timely manner per established procedures. Seeks assistance with duties when unable to perform safely, lacks training or outside scope of authorized duties. Completes annual competency assessments and trainings by meeting organizational standards and expectations.
Assist in development and implementation of unit policies and procedures. Demonstrates initiative to maintain knowledge and skills related to Unit/Dept. clinical area and contributes new ideas to assist team in achieving departmental/regional quality and service goals/initiatives. - Other duties as assigned, consistent with the job description.
Basic Qualifications
- Minimum one (1) year experience as Perioperative Assistant OR one (1) year experience in an inpatient or outpatient operating room.
Education
- High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.
License, Certification, Registration
- N/A
- Experience in Surgical Services terminal/turnover cleanin.
- Demonstrated critical thinking skills.
- Ability to perform multiple tasks in a busy environment in a calm and detailed manner.
- Demonstrated excellent communication and time management skills.
- Demonstrates customer relations skills including conflict resolution.
- Ability to communicate and exchange information, resolve questions/problems.
- Ability to prioritize multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Ability to work without direct supervision and as part of a team.
- Self-directed.
- Minimum two (2) years experience as a Perioperative Assistant or comparable healthcare position.
- Minimum two (2) years experience in an inpatient or outpatient operating room.
- Experience in Materials Management.
- Knowledge of OR equipment.
