The City of Hillsboro is currently seeking a Police Evidence Technician to join our Hillsboro Police Department! This is an exciting opportunity to serve the community in a key law enforcement support role. The Police Evidence Technician plays an important part in the administration of justice by assisting Police Officers in the identification, collection, processing, and preservation of all manner of evidence.
This work is invaluable by helping to solve crimes and ensure successful prosecutions.
- Processes and collects evidence at crime scenes, autopsies, and search warrants; responds to patrol requests for assistance in the field;
Assists police officers, investigators and other law enforcement personnel with fingerprinting, photography, diagramming and other duties related to documentation and collection of evidence. - Processes, maintains, and preserves all property collected by Hillsboro Police Department personnel, including property held as evidence, safekeeping and found property; maintains and preserves evidence records; assists public with identification and return of property.
- Disposal of evidence when necessary, by release to owner, destruction, or auction.
- Initiates and directs destruction of weapons and narcotics.
- Assists investigators and prosecutors in the preparation of search warrants, investigative information and cases for court purposes.
The principal function of an employee in this class is to perform the duties required for maintenance, storage, collection and documentation of evidence taken into custody by the Hillsboro Police Department. The work is performed under the supervision and direction of an assigned supervisor, but employee is expected to use independent judgment to plan, organize, implement and review duties with minimal supervision on a daily basis according to established procedures.
The principal duties of this class are performed in a police department environment and in the field. This is a non‑exempt position and is subject to the terms and conditions of a collective bargaining agreement.
- Processes, maintains, and preserves all property collected by Hillsboro Police Department personnel, including property held as evidence, safekeeping and found property; maintains and preserves evidence records; assists public with identification and return of property.
- Trains department personnel in evidence collection, processing and storage procedures, based on state and federal law and best practices. Provides instruction to community partners and department programs.
- Conducts forensic extractions on cell phones, captures and analyzes video, and documents evidence with photography.
- Disposal of evidence when necessary, by release to owner, destruction, or auction. Initiates and directs destruction of weapons and narcotics.
- Assists investigators and prosecutors in the preparation of search warrants, investigative information and cases for court purposes.
- Performs a variety of administrative functions related to the collection and preservation of property and evidence. May be required to review police reports and other sensitive documents. May transport property and evidence to various local, state and federal agencies during assigned shift.
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with assigned supervisors, other City employees, law enforcement personnel, vendors, contractors, and the general public.
- Interacts with police officers and law enforcement personnel through various communication strategies; and responds to police incidents and crime scenes as required.
- Provides testimony in a courtroom setting, as required.
- Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems.

Assists police officers, investigators and other law enforcement personnel with fingerprinting, photography, diagramming and other duties related to documentation and collection of evidence. - Maintains department laboratory and processes evidence for fingerprints and DNA.
- Bachelor's degree in Science, Criminal Justice, or related field and 2 years experience using complex software tools in a criminal justice environment;
One (1) year experience working with a police agency or in the law enforcement profession, preferably in the preservation and custody of evidence, property record‑keeping, and inventory maintenance or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
- Valid Driver's License and safe driving record.
- Ability to obtain Law Enforcement Data Systems (LEDS) certification within sixty days of hire.
