Position Summary
Pay range: $49.34/hr - $74.08/hr, plus $3.00/hr break lunch differential.
The Break/Lunch Team Nurse is responsible for providing professional nursing care within the nursing units and coordinating care planning and implementation with other disciplines for adolescent, adult, and older adult (geriatric) patients. The Break/Lunch Team Nurse serves the nursing departments as a professional practitioner, assuming responsibility and accountability for applying the nursing process and delivering patient care while relieving other licensed nurses during break/meal periods.
According to established standards of nursing practice and care, the nurse must make clinical nursing judgments efficiently and effectively, demonstrating critical thinking and performance ability in coordinating patient care and consistently meeting professional standards. The Break/Lunch Team Registered Nurse delivers skilled, high‑quality patient care, assists in planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluating nursing practice, and collaborates with the healthcare team.
- Performs the duties and responsibilities of the following position (use the applicable department Job Description and Initial Competencies):
- Registered Nurse, Job Code 60005 for the particular unit where the work is performed.
- Works closely with hospital supervisor and department nurse leadership to identify where resources will be needed.
- Reviews departmental lunch plans and prioritizes based on department resources and patient needs.
- Provides break and meal coverage to the assigned departments based on the department plan for that shift.
- When not engaged in meal and rest break, relief is available for acute care assignments as needed, serving as a resource to the nursing departments, assisting with nursing care as directed by the hospital supervisor or department nurse leadership.
- Maintains clinical competency in nursing departments to the extent needed to provide break and meal relief and assist with general tasks.
- Maintains current tracking sheet of lunch relief provided on each unit for that shift.
- Completes compliance audits as assigned by nurse leader, relief charge, or manager.
Required:
Associates Degree in Nursing.
Preferred:
Bachelor or Master of Science in Nursing.
Required:
Minimum of two (2) years of nursing experience in the area being hired into. Experience with quality improvement; developing initiatives, monitoring clinical care.
Preferred:
Management experience.
- Current licensure as a registered nurse by the Oregon State Board of Nursing.
- American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS.
- Neonatal Resuscitation (NRP) required upon hire (Women’s & Children’s Center).
- American Heart Association Healthcare Provider ACLS required upon hire (Medical Surgical, Critical Care, Cath Lab, GI, Emergency Department, Day Surgery).
- PALS or ENPC required upon hire (Emergency Department).
- ACLS required upon hire (Day Surgery).
- PALS required upon hire (Day Surgery).
- TNCC required upon hire (Emergency Department).
- Certification in field of specialty/discipline (refer to policy N‑12U) or Nursing Leadership preferred within one (1) year of hire.
- Demonstrates effective written, communication, and interpersonal skills—body language, filters, listening, paraphrasing and questioning—and applies them to change management, team building, and facilitation of team effectiveness.
- Possesses knowledge of current concepts of nursing and medical practices, and skills necessary for providing appropriate care for patients based on age, culture, ethnicity, and belief systems.
- Exhibits effective conflict resolution skills and strong collaborative skills in daily interactions and decision‑making.
- Demonstrates ability to use a personal computer efficiently.
- Must be able to function effectively and professionally in high‑stress and critical situations.
- Bilingual skills are a plus.
