Position Summary
Pay range: $49.34/hr – $74.08/hr plus 10% per diem differential.
Ensures the delivery of quality nursing care for patients undergoing surgical and non‑invasive procedures in accordance with age‑related and individual needs, physician orders, hospital policy, standards of care, and nursing practice. Responsible for assessing patient needs, planning nursing care to meet those needs, and ensuring that the plan is carried out and documented according to the nursing process.
Perianesthesia Nursing Care Consists of 3 Phases- Pre‑op: (66101‑DSU; 65911‑TOPS Pre Post)
- Phase I (Recovery Room): (66501; 65911‑TOPS Pre Post)
- Phase II (DSU): (66101‑DSU; 65911‑TOPS Pre Post)
- Perform and document assessments and data collection for pre‑op/post‑op patients using hospital and departmental charting formats.
- Assemble required patient data for pre‑op chart.
- Administer medication as ordered by physician via all routes safely and accurately according to procedure.
- Utilize PACU equipment safely and accurately.
- Perform procedures following established guidelines and manufacturer’s recommendations.
- Manage hemodynamic status in post‑op patients as ordered using specific supplies.
- Assist physicians with procedures such as arterial line, spinal, epidural, and intubation.
- Follow procedures for personal protective equipment, infection control, and disposal of hazardous waste and sharps.
- Participate in stand‑by call according to department policy.
- Use the nursing process of assessment, implementation, planning and evaluation to deliver care in the post‑anesthesia care unit.
- Prioritize patient care based on essential needs and available unit resources.
- Respond efficiently to emergency situations in accordance with policies and code procedures.
- Adapt care to accommodate unexpected changes in patient status.
- Identify patient and significant other learning needs and implement appropriate educational measures.
- Apply the appropriate standard of care for the identified surgical or procedural diagnosis.
- Engage in self‑directed learning and participate in continuing education.
- Demonstrate awareness of legal issues and manage situations to reduce risk.
- Participate in quality improvement and performance improvement activities.
- Perform or delegate tasks for the health‑care team.
- Use problem‑solving techniques for patient care and unit activity decisions.
- Apply cost‑effective measures in patient care delivery.
- Communicate patient needs, changes in condition, and time changes to staff, family members, and patients.
- Provide accurate and complete hand‑off reports at shift transitions.
- Advocate for patients and significant others’ rights.
- Manage conflict while fostering effective relationships with the health‑care team, patients, and significant others.
- Collaborate respectfully to benefit the patient and department.
- Function as a preceptor for new staff members.
- Engage in cooperative effort to accomplish all unit tasks.
- Attend staff meetings, in‑services, and continuing education opportunities.
- Participate in the quality improvement process to make patient‑centered decisions.
- Assist with coordination and monitoring of specialty supply loan/borrow processes.
- Follow correct procedures in unusual and emergent situations.
- Participate in annual inventory processes.
- Implement advanced cardiac life support skills during code blue situations.
- Promote cost effectiveness through proper use and conservation of supplies and equipment.
- Identify cost‑saving measures.
Required Education
:
Associate’s Degree in Nursing.
Preferred Education
:
Bachelor’s or Master’s of Science in Nursing.
Required Experience
: N/A.
- Phase I:
Minimum one year in PACU or critical care. - Pre‑op/Phase II:
Minimum one year in DSU or Med/Surg.
- Membership in a relevant professional organization preferred.
- Demonstrated care for pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Knowledge of governmental regulations and standards of practice.
- Effective communication skills (written, verbal, non‑verbal).
