Probation And Parole Officer

Washington County Community Corrections is now hiring for a highly collaborative and supportive individual to join our team as a Probation and Parole Officer (PPO). An essential function of this role will be supporting a caseload of people from various backgrounds.

Washington County Community Corrections serves an important role in keeping our community safe. This department works to prevent the recurrence of crime among adult Justice Involved Individuals (JIIs) by holding them accountable to the conditions of their supervision while supporting their efforts to live successfully in the community.

Ideal Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):

  • Crisis intervention techniques, including methods of restraint and self-defense.
  • Communicable diseases and associated prevention, control, and treatment.
  • Behavior and adjustment problems of adult criminal JIIs.
  • Adult criminal justice systems, including sentencing and probation and parole procedures.
  • Interviewing, behavioral, and probation/parole counseling techniques.
  • Caseload management.
  • Service resource development.
  • Principles and processes for providing customer service.
  • Techniques of operating basic computer software and hardware applications.

Skills to:

  • Communicate with individuals or groups to effectively convey information.
  • Verbally persuade and calmly defuse difficult and stressful circumstances.
  • Effectively manage time and resources.
  • Prepare written reports and maintain records.
  • Operate typical office software.

Ability to:

  • Investigate cases and objectively evaluate information.
  • Assess personal needs of adult JIIs and determine treatment plans.
  • Maintain accurate and complete casework records.
  • Learn and use self-defense tactics including the use of protective devices issued by the department.
  • Actively participate in annual training and demonstrations on proper field security, physical defense, and arrest tactics and practices.
  • Learn to handle, disarm, and control weapons in a safe and proper manner.
  • Meet a variety of physical exertion requirements in the use of equipment and in the control and manipulation of resisting JIIs.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally both orally and in writing with individuals of varying backgrounds, including JIIs, court and law enforcement personnel, and the general public.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with individuals, including co-workers and supervisors.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with individuals and groups who come from diverse backgrounds and represent members of the public, coworkers, and/or vendors.
  • Work without direct supervision.
  • Meet deadlines and schedule time efficiently.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Probation and Parole Officer I

  • Bachelor's degree in any concentration, AND Three (3) years of experience in corrections, criminal justice, counseling, social work, or a related field. Possession of a Bachelor's degree in corrections, criminal justice, counseling, social work, or a related field may substitute for two (2) years of required work experience. OR
  • Associate's degree in any concentration, AND Four (4) years of experience in corrections, criminal justice, counseling, social work, or a related field. Possession of an Associate's degree in corrections, criminal justice, counseling, social work, or a related field may substitute for one (1) year of required work experience. OR
  • High School Diploma or equivalent, AND Five (5) years of experience in corrections, criminal justice, counseling, social work, or a related field.

Probation and Parole Officer II

  • Bachelor's degree in any concentration, AND Three (3) years of experience in corrections, criminal justice, counseling, social work, or a related field; OR
  • Associate's degree in any concentration, AND Four (4) years of experience in corrections, criminal justice, counseling, social work, or a related field; OR
  • High School Diploma or equivalent, AND Five (5) years of experience in corrections, criminal justice, counseling, social work, or a related field.
