About the Opportunity:
Washington County's Land Use & Transportation Department is seeking candidates to fill multiple Road Maintenance Worker I (RMW I) vacancies with a tentative start date of September 14, 2026.
The Operations and Maintenance Division is the public works arm of the Department of Land Use & Transportation. The maintenance group performs a variety of tasks and activities associated with the repair and upkeep of the county's road and bridge network.
The Road Maintenance Worker I (RMW I) is the entry-level position for the road crews performing a variety of manual labor tasks connected with the repair and maintenance of public works infrastructure. Examples of activities performed by the RMW I include, but are not limited to, digging ditches, installing culverts and pipes, raking asphalt, patching potholes, repairing and replacing bridge components, repairing concrete structures, trimming and cutting vegetation, and installing traffic control devices.
Additionally, the RMW I sets up work zones and controls traffic as a certified flagger. Once trained, the RMW I also operates assorted small, motorized equipment and performs minor maintenance on the equipment such as changing mower blades, sharpening chain saws, and cleaning tools.
Work is frequently performed on irregular shifts and hours under extreme conditions including emergency situations, inclement weather, unstable ground, heavy traffic, high noise levels, dust, poor visibility, at extreme heights and in close proximity to heavy equipment. Crew members are also front-line emergency responders during inclement weather events such as snow and ice storms, floods, wind storms, and earthquakes. Work can occur outside of regularly scheduled hours including nights, weekends, and holidays depending on the business needs of the community and organization.
Additionally, overtime opportunities are available for qualified employees to participate in scheduled overtime duties and stand-by assignments for after-hour call-outs.
Please note that this position works four 10-hour days in summer and five 8-hour days the remainder of the year.
Ideal Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
* Basic principles and practices of performing manual labor associated with general construction.
* Safely working on a construction job site.
* Use hand and power tools.
* Operate assigned equipment safely and efficiently.
* Lift or carry construction materials including items that may be heavy or awkward.
* Perform heavy physical work in, sometimes, adverse conditions.
* Carry out oral and written instructions and read equipment instruction manuals.
* Interact with the public, coworkers, and management with respect and dignity.

Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
* A high school diploma or GED.
Additional Qualifications:
* For the first 12 months of employment, must possess a driver's license valid in the State of Oregon, and have an acceptable driving record. AND
* Within 12 months of hire, must obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) valid in the State of Oregon which includes a current DOT Medical Certificate, a tanker endorsement and no restrictions on air brake, manual transmission, and tractor trailer 5th wheel. AND
* All external candidates will be required to pass a post-offer physical abilities assessment and drug screening prior to employment.
Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL) Requirement
