Position Summary
The driver is responsible for the safe, timely, and efficient transportation of freight using a 26-foot box truck while ensuring compliance with all department of transportation (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). and company safety standards. This role includes loading, unloading, securing, and delivering cargo, performing pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections, and maintaining accurate documentation. The driver serves as a professional representative of the company by providing exceptional customer service, communicating effectively with dispatch and customer personnel, and ensuring freight is handled safely and delivered on schedule.
The position requires a strong commitment to safety, attention to detail, regulatory compliance, and the ability to work independently while maintaining productivity and service excellence.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Operate a 26-foot box truck safely and in compliance with all traffic laws and department of transportation and efficiently load and unload cargo, often using a manual or powered pallet jack.
- Back truck to customer docks safely and efficiently.
- Maintain compliance with federal and state safety regulations and demonstrate safe, professional driving behavior.
- Communicate with customer representatives in a pleasant, respectful, and efficient manner.
- Communicate and coordinate with dispatch personnel.
- Comply with all applicable DOT requirements, including drug and alcohol testing when required.
- Secure cargo and properly arrange and balance freight within the vehicle.
- Ensure any mechanical issues with the vehicle are addressed before operating.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Work Experience
Valid driver's license with a clean driving record. Minimum of 2 years of professional commercial driving experience within the last 4 years; 3 or more years preferred. Meet applicable DOT qualification requirements for the position. Experience with load securement, route planning, and navigating various road conditions. Exceptional customer service skills and the ability to handle sensitive cargo with care. Strong attention to detail.
Must have a TWIC card or be eligible to obtain one within 90 days, if required.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to sit for extended periods while operating a commercial vehicle. The employee must use hands and fingers to operate the steering wheel, controls, GPS devices, and other onboard equipment. The role also requires reaching with hands and arms, climbing in and out of the cab, and occasionally stooping, kneeling, bending, or crouching during inspections and loading/unloading activities.
The employee must be able to communicate effectively using verbal and hearing skills, often via mobile devices. Vision requirements include the ability to see at a distance for safe driving, as well as close vision for reading documents and performing vehicle inspections. Physically able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to:
- Frequently carry, push, or pull freight weighing 1–125 pounds.
- Lift up to 50 pounds.
- Frequently reach for freight at waist level and occasionally above shoulder height or below waist level.
- Operate vehicle controls and foot pedals.
- Frequently squat or crouch to handle and position freight.
- Climb in and out of the truck (4–6 feet) 8–10 times daily using steps and handholds; occasionally bend, twist, climb, squat, crouch, and balance.
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections.
- Fuel vehicles, check engine oil and coolant levels, and perform basic preventative maintenance.
- Spend at least 5% of the workday standing and 5% walking on wood, metal, or concrete surfaces that may occasionally be wet or slippery.
- Reach above shoulder level, at waist level, and below waist level to safely operate vehicle controls.
Work Environment
