Substitute Teacher Job Description

In the absence of a regular classroom teacher, help students learn subject matter and/or skills required for scheduled lessons and provide meaningful instruction for assigned classrooms. To provide each student with the help, counsel, and learning experience he needs to progress toward the established educational goals. To create a flexible instructional program and a class environment favorable to learning and personal growth;

to establish effective rapport with pupils; to motivate pupils to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to live a rewarding life in an ever-changing world.

Teachers' lesson plans and assignments, if needed. Provides individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student. Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students. Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom. Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals.

Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media. Instructs pupils in a classroom, utilizing the course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities. Collaborates with colleagues to promote an optimal learning environment for pupils. Reports to the school office at the beginning of the school day to pick up required materials/schedule of classes, return materials, and sign timesheets at the end of the school day.

Follows sign-out procedures as prescribed by the principal. Carries out a program of study prescribed in the lesson plans left by the classroom teacher. Maintains a neat and orderly classroom. Straightens chairs and tables, clears chalkboard, etc. Takes attendance by school procedures. Indicate the basic expectations for behavior to students at the beginning of class. Ensures that the students are never left unattended in the classroom.

May perform duties usually required of absent teachers, such as lunchroom duty, hall monitoring, etc. Knows emergency evacuation routes for the classrooms assigned. Knows procedures for referring students who have disciplinary problems. Performs other related duties as directed by the principal.

Daily up to a Ten-month year. Salary by certification level.
