Position

Purpose:

The EC Teacher Assistant performs paraprofessional work assisting classroom teachers or other professionals to achieve instructional objectives. The assistant assists students with disabilities with establishing goals, personal care, mobility, academics, behavioral support, and may lead small group activities as directed. Additionally, the assistant supports the supervising teacher with general housekeeping and clerical duties.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

General knowledge of special education teaching practices, methods, and techniques.
General knowledge of lead teacher activities, daily classroom routines, student handbook rules, emergency procedures, and administrative organization.
Ability to maintain files, use classroom and instructional equipment, and operate audio‑visual, standard office, word, data processing, and adaptive equipment.
Ability to monitor student safety, motivate students, maintain order and discipline, and establish effective working relationships with teachers, peers, parents, students, and administrators.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Minimum Education:

High School diploma.
Minimum of 48 hours of college‑level coursework with a 2.0 GPA.
Less than 48 credit hours: complete the Workkeys Assessment.
Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Spanish speaking.

Certification and License Requirements:

For work with Emotionally Disabled students: initial certification in a Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) program and renewal as required.
Valid driver’s license issued by the NC Department of Motor Vehicles.

Preferred Qualifications:

Associate Degree.
Three to five years of experience working in an EC classroom/environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Assist the classroom teacher with specific duties assigned or specialized tasks to achieve instructional and behavioral objectives.

Work with individuals, small groups, or large groups as assigned.

Assist with behavior modifications as requested.

Operate adaptive equipment and assist students with personal care tasks (lavatory, clothing, hygiene, diapering, toileting, wash‑up).

Escort students as assigned, assist with mobility needs, lift and position students, and transport them within the school and on field trips.

Monitor students during assigned periods to maintain a safe and positive learning environment.

Provide programmed practice activities and repetitions developed by the teacher, therapist, or pathologist.

Report student concerns promptly to the teacher and assist with resolution.

Assist with breakfast, lunch, and snack duties, including clean‑up.

Maintain confidential records and files.

Participate in staff development activities as directed by the Department for Exceptional Children.

Perform additional duties as requested by the teacher, principal, or District EC Staff.

Pre‑Kindergarten Classes:

Assist the teacher with room setup for morning activities and supervise morning routines.

Support teaching activities, reinforce learning in small groups, supervise centers, and assist independent projects.

Monitor student behavior, reward good behavior, respond to inappropriate behavior, and supervise playtime.

Administer approved medications and assist sick or injured children, contacting parents if needed.

Prepare letters for parents about classroom activities.

Separate Setting Classrooms:

Assist with delivery of special services for intellectually and/or physically disabled students.

Assist with therapeutic rehabilitation and prepare students for therapy and other special classes.

Monitor medication administration and special diets.

Incorporate fine motor, sensory, self‑help, social skills, and computer skills into classroom activities.

Collaborate with teachers, parents, doctors, nurses, therapists, and counselors to meet student needs.
