Position
Purpose:
The Teacher Assistant performs responsible human support and paraprofessional work assisting classroom teachers or other professionals to achieve instructional objectives; assisting students with disabilities in achieving established goals and with personal care and mobility. Further, the Teacher Assistant provides individual assistance with academic and behavioral problems and may lead small-group activities as directed. The Teacher Assistant assists the supervising teacher with general housekeeping and clerical duties.
EssentialJob Functions
- Assists the teacher with executing instruction and evaluating its effectiveness.
- Constantly monitors the safety and well-being of students; monitors student attitudes and encourages self-esteem; assists students with becoming increasingly independent.
- Monitors student behavior and helps maintain discipline in the classroom; records time-outs and class suspensions; assists with crisis prevention; restrains students as needed.
- Assists students with learning; reinforces and clarifies instructions; conducts short sessions on improving study skills; provides one-on-one assistance as needed.
- Maintains standardized records and documentation concerning the progress of students.
- Performs general housekeeping duties in maintaining an orderly classroom; performs repair and maintenance tasks related to school equipment.
- Performs various clerical duties as needed, maintains records of student progress; develops and files incident reports; grades student papers and scores tests; checks daily attendance; makes copies; develops classroom display and instructional materials; maintains and operates audiovisual equipment; orders supplies; maintains class files, etc.
- High School diploma
- Minimum of 48 hours of college-level coursework. A minimum GPA of 2.0 is required.
- Less than 48 credit hours, complete the Workkeys Assessment
- Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
- Spanish speaking
- Associate Degree
- Three (3) to five (5) years of experience working in a classroom/environment
- Assist teacher(s) with executing instruction and evaluating their effectiveness
- Constantly monitor the safety and well-being of students

- Assist students with learning; reinforce and clarify instructions as permitted

- Perform general housekeeping duties associated with maintaining an orderly classroom
- Maintain records of student progress as instructed by the teacher
- Develop and file incident reports
- Assist the teacher with grading student papers and scoring tests as requested
- Serve as a test proctor as directed
- Check daily attendance
- Develop classroom displays and instructional materials
- Maintain and operate audiovisual equipment
- Participates in staff development workshops and staff meetings as required
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Teacher and/or the Principal or Principal’s Designee
- General knowledge of procedures to follow in the event of an emergency.
- Some knowledge of the curriculum for the grade.
- Ability to motivate students.
