Position: RN Clinical Nurse II (Part-time) - Pre-Op/Post Anesthesia Care Unit

UNC Hillsborough is seeking experienced RNs to join our Pre‑Op and PACU team, supporting a high‑volume surgical program that includes:

  • Orthopedic Center of Excellence for Total Joints
  • Sports Orthopedics, Foot & Ankle, Ortho & Neuro Spine
  • General Surgery
  • Urology
  • Gynecology
  • Ophthalmology
  • Gastroenterology (GI)

RNs in this fast‑paced, team‑oriented environment provide comprehensive assessments, patient and family education, pain and symptom management, and close monitoring of patients before and after surgery.

We are seeking candidates with prior Preop, PACU, ED, or ICU experience, as this role requires strong critical thinking, rapid assessment skills, and comfort with high‑acuity and post‑anesthesia patients. Schedule flexibility is vital; candidates must be willing to work varying shifts and participate in call coverage based on unit needs.

Required

Certifications:

ACLS must be obtained before working independently. PALS must be completed within six months of hire.

Summary: Provides competent clinical nursing care consistent with professional standards. Reporting and accountable to the Nurse Manager/Director, the Clinical Nurse is responsible for coordinating and delivering patient care utilizing the nursing process in a hospital setting.

Responsibilities:

  • Education: Participates in identifying and meeting learning needs, attends education programs, uses patient education materials, and assesses readiness to learn of patients/families/caregivers.
  • Evaluation of Care: Identifies expected patient outcomes, seeks guidance in revising care plans, participates in interdisciplinary discussions, and communicates relevant information.
  • Implementation: Demonstrates competence in care of patients with complex problems, performs bedside point‑of‑care testing, follows nursing standards and policies, prioritizes care, and consults appropriate resources.
  • Leadership: Develops goals for professional growth, achieves objectives, participates in unit goals and performance improvement, uses communication systems, promotes cost‑effective care, and fosters a safe environment.
  • Patient Assessment: Recognizes data from complex situations to determine priorities, includes physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety needs, and anticipates discharge needs.
  • Planning: Collaborates with patient/family to prepare or update the plan of care, uses multidisciplinary resources, addresses cultural and ethnic issues, and prioritizes tasks.
  • Research: Reads relevant journals, proposes ideas to staff, and assesses applicability to practice.

    Education Requirements:

    • Graduation from a school of professional nursing.
    • If hired after January 6, 2014, must be enrolled within four years of employment, and obtain a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing within seven years of the employment date.

    Licensure/Certification Requirements:

    • Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina.
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification.

    Professional Experience Requirements:

    • One (1) year of nursing experience.
