Description

The Nursing Assistant II, position is for the 25-bed surgical unit. This unit provides acute inpatient services for the surgical patient population which includes Joint, Spine, Urology, and General Surgery admissions as well as medical overflow patients. We are looking for an experienced, energetic, patient-centered team member with a positive attitude. UNC Health Care Hillsborough Campus is a community hospital which is an extension of UNC Medical Center focusing on many of our elective surgical programs. The 163-bed facility combines a community hospital culture with the innovative procedures and care for which the UNC Medical Center is known. The Hillsborough Hospital has achieved accreditation by The Joint Commission's disease specific program for their Total Hip and Knee Replacement service.

This accreditation is the result of many years of work by the inter‑professional team caring for these patients. The Hillsborough Campus has also received the Press Ganey Guardian of Excellence Award for Patient Experience and ranks in the top five percent in the nation for patient experience. The Hillsborough Hospital is located at 430 Waterstone Drive, Hillsborough, NC and offers free parking for employees.

This is a 36 hours per week position; working 12 hour rotating shifts (7:00am – 7:30pm & 7:00pm – 7:30am) with weekend and holiday rotation.

Summary

Provides routine direct and indirect patient care in a hospital, clinic or home health care setting. All work performed is under the direct supervision of a registered nurse or physician.

Responsibilities
  • Assist physicians and other health care providers with routine examinations and procedures, and procurement of equipment and supplies.
  • Provide administrative and clerical support including PI audits and data entry.
  • Provide clinical support assistance to include, but not limited to, cleaning the work area, maintaining office equipment, troubleshooting common software and hardware problems, changing linens, checking supply inventory, re‑stocking supplies, transporting patients/supplies/specimens, and assisting in the orientation of new employees and students.
  • Provide direct personal care to patients as outlined in plan of care activities such as bathing, dressing, feeding, assisting with ambulation. Measure and record vital signs, patient height and weight. May be responsible for specimen collection, skin preps/scrubs, catheter care, capillary blood glucose checks, simple wound care, range of motion exercises, and/or postural drainage, oxygen room set‑up and monitors oxygen flow‑rate, perform oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal suctioning, tracheostomy care, fecal impaction removal, sterile dressing change wound irrigation for wounds that are 48 hours old, IV fluid assembly and monitoring, IV site care and discontinue peripheral IV, ostomy irrigation and care, urinary catheterization and irrigation, performs established oral, nasogastric, and gastrostomy tube feedings.
  • Reinforce routine teaching given to patients by the registered nurse or physician and document patient understanding of instructions. Distribute patient education materials at the request of patients and/or health care providers.

    • High School diploma or General Education Development
    Licensure/Certification Requirements
    • Licensed as Nursing Assistant II with the North Carolina Board of Nursing
    • Listed as Nursing Assistant I with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
    Professional Experience Requirements
    • Prefer six (6) months of nursing assistant experience
    Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements
    • Fluent in verbal and written English language and able to develop basic computer skills.
