Summary

A Police Officer at the UNC Hospital campus is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of patients, staff, visitors, and property within the hospital campus. The officer will perform a variety of law enforcement duties, including patrolling the campus, responding to emergencies, and enforcing hospital policies and regulations. This role is critical in maintaining a secure and peaceful environment conducive to healthcare delivery.

Responsibilities
  • Emergency Response – Responds promptly to any emergency situation and activated security alarms, maintaining knowledge of emergency procedures and UNC Hospitals Police response protocols.
  • Conflict Resolution – Mediates and resolves conflicts involving patients, visitors, or staff, using de‑escalation techniques to manage potentially volatile situations.
  • Community Policing – Protects and serves hospital staff, patients, and visitors; implements preventative patrol techniques and performs specialized duties to deter crime and promote safety.
  • Investigations and Incident Report Writing – Enters incident reports into the Police‑Pak system in a complete and concise manner, documenting all criminal incidents and filing prosecution reports.
  • Patrol and Surveillance – Patrols assigned areas to detect and deter criminal activity, documents hazards, and secures property.
  • Policy and Procedures – Maintains familiarity with departmental policies and hospital policies, including the Departmental Policy Manual and federal criminal statutes.
  • Special Areas of Responsibility – Manages assigned security-sensitive areas, conducts surveillance, and coordinates inspections.
  • Community Engagement – Builds positive relationships with hospital staff, patients, and visitors; provides assistance to enhance their sense of security and well‑being.
  • Traffic Control – Conducts parking surveys when requested, enforces parking regulations, and writes citations for unauthorized vehicles.
Other Information

Education Requirements:

  • None required as long as other position qualifications are met.
  • Successful completion of Basic Law Enforcement Training or the equivalent.

Licensure/Certification Requirements:

  • Valid North Carolina Driver’s license.
  • Completed North Carolina’s Basic Law Enforcement Training and hold at least general certification from the NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission.
  • Out‑of‑state candidates must have completed an accredited BLET course and not have a service break exceeding one year; must complete 56 hours of additional training and pass the state exam.
  • Candidates must pass a background investigation, including driving history, psychological testing, drug screening, and physical examination.
  • Must have a passing score of 70% on the qualification course of fire.

Professional Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum of 2 years experience as a certified Law Enforcement Officer.

Knowledge/Skills/ and Abilities Requirements:

  • Shift work from 550 am to 550 pm, with ability to work a shift as required.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to interact professionally with the public and the criminal justice system.
  • Ability to write computer‑generated reports using a computerized format.
  • Adherence to moral and ethical principles and possession of sound moral character.
  • Ability to work cooperatively within a group or as part of a coordinated effort.
  • Capability to lead or take initiative in responsibilities or decisions with minimal supervision.
  • Reliability, dependability, accuracy, and honesty in performance.
  • Ability to judge, decide, or form opinions objectively and responsibly regarding actions.
  • Exhibition of professional conduct and standing practice.
  • Application of laws, ordinances, and departmental policies to a broad range of circumstances.
