Salary: $6,495 to $7,216 per month (SR-21, Step C to I) - Salary includes Related Shortage Category Differential.

Duties Summary

This position assists an Engineer in the Administration of building construction and other contracts; supervises inspectors of a lower grade; reviews plans and specifications; and represents an Engineer during inspections of minor projects, performing other related duties as assigned. It also involves inspections involving substantial complexities, such as multi‑story and multimillion‑dollar structures built by private builders. The engineer‑in‑charge collaborates with builders to identify and correct deficiencies, interpret and explain state requirements, and resolve problems such as unauthorized deviations from approved plans and specifications.

It inspects structures involving complex construction problems, including the installation and testing of sophisticated electrical and mechanical systems in large, multistory, special‑purpose buildings.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

The State of Hawaii requires all persons seeking employment with the government of the State shall be citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens of the United States, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment in the United States.

Basic Experience/

Education:

Work experience which involved tasks that demonstrated the ability to read and understand oral and written instructions; write simply and directly; and perform arithmetic computations.

General

Experience:

TWO (2) YEARS of JOURNEY‑LEVEL experience in the building construction trades, demonstrating knowledge of the full range of specialized knowledge, skills, abilities, and practices used in such trades, including knowledge of building construction methods and materials, safety requirements and practices, and the ability to read and interpret blueprints and sketches.

Specialized

Experience:

TWO (2) YEARS of either:

  • Building construction inspection work experience;
  • Supervisory work experience over a force of skilled trade workers in the building construction industry involving responsibility for interpreting plans and specifications and inspecting quality of workmanship and materials for adherence to such plans and specifications.

Driver's License: Applicants must possess a valid driver's license at the time of appointment.
