ResponsibilitiesThis position assists an Engineer in the administration of building construction and other contracts; supervises inspectors of a lower grade; reviews plans and specifications; represents an Engineer during inspection of minor projects and performs other related duties as assigned.
This position also performs inspections involving substantial complexities, such as inspecting various aspects of multi‑story or multi‑million‑dollar structures constructed by a variety of private builders. The inspector works with the engineer‑in‑charge and builders to identify and ensure correction of deficiencies, to interpret and explain State requirements, and to resolve problems such as unauthorized deviations from approved plans and specifications. Inspections also involve complex construction problems, including the installation and testing of sophisticated electrical and mechanical systems in large multistory, special‑purpose buildings.
QualificationsLegal Authorization to Work Requirement: The State of Hawaii requires all persons seeking employment with the government of the State to be citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens of the United States, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment in the United States.
Basic Experience/
Education:
Work experience which involved tasks that demonstrated the ability to read and understand oral and written instructions; write simply and directly; and perform arithmetic computations.
General
Experience:
TWO (2) YEARS of JOURNEY LEVEL experience in building construction trades, demonstrating knowledge of specialized knowledge, skills, abilities and practices used in such trades, including building construction methods, materials, safety requirements, and the ability to read and interpret blueprints and sketches.
Specialized
Experience:
- A. Building construction inspection work experience; or
- B. Supervisory work experience over a force of skilled trades workers in the building construction industry, involving responsibility for interpreting plans and specifications and inspecting the quality of workmanship and materials for adherence to such plans and specifications.
Driver's License: Applicants must possess a valid driver's license at the time of appointment.
