Job Summary
Establish a list of qualified applicants for Highway Construction Inspector positions I–IV at the Oahu District Office, Department of Transportation – Highways, State of Hawaii.
Salary Range- Highway Construction Inspector I: $4,537 – $5,057 per month (SR‑12, Step C to I)
- Highway Construction Inspector II: $4,931 – $5,483 per month (SR‑14, Step C to I)
- Highway Construction Inspector III: $5,603 – $6,184 per month (SR‑17, Step C to I)
- Highway Construction Inspector IV: $6,090 – $6,704 per month (SR‑19, Step C to I)
- Salaries include Shortage Category Differential.
- Highway Construction Inspector I:
Inspects specific phases of highway construction to ensure methods, practices, and materials conform to plans, specifications, contracts, and standard methods; performs related duties as assigned. - Highway Construction Inspector II
:
Inspects various phases of highway construction, resolves problems based on precedents or instructions, and escalates issues beyond scope to supervisors. - Highway Construction Inspector III
:
Independently inspects all phases of highway construction and related structures for conformance with plans, specifications, contracts, and standard methods. - Highway Construction Inspector IV
:
Supervises and participates in inspection of all phases of highway construction; independently inspects a wide variety of projects; may train and supervise lower‑level inspectors; performs related duties as assigned.
Legal Authorization to Work
:
Citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens of the United States, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.
Basic Education/Experience
:
Graduation from high school or equivalent; or work experience demonstrating knowledge of English grammar, spelling, arithmetic, reading and understanding oral/written instructions, and basic written communication.
General Experience
:
One year of work experience in one or a combination of the following:
- Journey level experience in a construction trade, with ability to read and interpret blueprints or plans.
- Progressively responsible experience performing technical, non‑professional engineering tasks under general supervision, including inspectional work comparable to the State of Hawaii Engineering Aid III level.
Specialized Experience (for levels II–IV):
Progressively responsible work experience in inspection of highway construction phases:
- Highway Construction Inspector II – 1 year
- Highway Construction Inspector III – 2 years
- Highway Construction Inspector IV – 3 years
Driver's License Requirement
:
Valid driver’s license in the State of Hawaii at the time of appointment.
