Assistant Professor (Weed Science) (#0083633, CTAHR/PEPS/Hilo) Description of Duties

Duties and responsibilities

Instruction (40%) Academic Instruction (20%)
  • Teach, in-person or online, undergraduate and graduate courses related to Weed Science and Weed Management, or teach other courses, based on departmental needs.
  • Participate in teaching rotation of a graduate-level seminar in the department.
  • Contribute to new curriculum development at the undergraduate or graduate level.
  • Advise and mentor graduate, undergraduate, and/or high school students, serve on graduate student committees, and supervise graduate assistants and post-doctoral associates to support their academic and professional success.
Extension Instruction (20%)
  • Educate agricultural producers, industry representatives, Extension Agents, state and federal government representatives, and law regulators about the issues and latest weed management practices.
  • Develop and disseminate weed management recommendations through print and other multi-media avenues.
  • Educate Extension Agents and Plant Pest Diagnosticians on weed identification and weed management practices.
  • Organize extension events, such as workshops, to facilitate learning and adoption of new weed management technologies and practices in Hawaii.
Research (40%)
  • Develop a Hawaii-focused and globally recognized applied research program on the sustainable management of weeds in agriculture, urban, and natural ecosystems that includes biological, cultural, chemical, ecological, mechanical, and integrated approaches.
  • Secure extramural funds to support the research and Extension program.
  • Develop decision support tools for the adoption of new weed management technologies in Hawaii.
  • Publish referred articles in leading peer-reviewed journals and present research findings at national and international scientific conferences. Publish research-based peer-reviewed Extension articles, bulletins, and factsheets.
Service (20%)
  • Participate in Department, College, and University service, including serving on graduate committees, department and University committees, and faculty senates.
  • Providing service to professional societies, and community, including but not limited to reviewing for, or editing academic or professional books or journals; serving as officer or on the board of professional organizations; organizing professional conferences, workshops, or training programs; judging entries at national meetings; serving on review committees for grants or programs; or judging student entries at local or national science fairs.
  • Contribute to the Hawaii community through service on boards or advising local non-profits working in the area of conservation and weed/invasive plant species management, or providing unpaid subject matter expertise or testimony.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Doctorate or equivalent terminal degree from a college or university of recognized standing in Weed Science, or related fields, with experience in weed management. All degree requirements must be completed at the time of hire.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Demonstrated experience in research in Weed Science at the graduate or postdoctoral level.
  • Demonstrated skills in experimental design, conducting appropriate statistical analysis.
  • Record of research productivity as evidenced by publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with farmers, natural resource managers, homeowners, and stakeholder groups such as community organizations, governmental agencies, and commodity groups.
  • Dedication to the success of students and the land-grant mission of serving stakeholders and the community.
  • Professionalism in meetings and conferring with others.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Demonstrated record of scholarly publications in peer-reviewed journals in the field of invasion plant biology, weed ecology, weed science, or weed management.
  • Demonstrated ability to obtain and manage extramural funding.
  • Postdoctoral research experience in the field of invasion plant biology, weed ecology, weed science, or weed management.
  • Experience in applying conventional or modern weed management techniques.
  • Knowledge of weed ecology, and weed biological control.
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching University-level in-person or web-based courses with teaching evaluations.
