Position Overview
The University of Hawaii at Hilo (UH Hilo) is a public liberal arts and sciences university on the Island of Hawaii, recognized for its integration of cultural immersion and place-based research that leverages the island's extraordinary geological, biological, and cultural diversity. Housed in the Department of Psychology, the Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology is designed to provide multicultural, evidence-based student-centered training in counseling psychology with a specialization in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. The program has two optional concentration areas: (1) Addictions Counseling and (2) Research. The mission of the program is to prepare students to help meet the mental health service needs of the diverse and multicultural populations in Hawaii and beyond.

The program is designed to train students to become knowledgeable, skillful, ethical, and reflective mental health counselors, and to serve as a foundation for students interested in pursuing advanced graduate studies.
This tenure-track position is responsible for teaching courses in Addictions Counseling, developing courses in the person's area of expertise, and teaching other undergraduate & graduate courses as needed. Scholarly activities will include conducting research in the person's area of expertise, disseminating the research findings in publication outlets that advances the department's reputation, and actively competing for grants to support one's scholarship.

Beyond teaching and research, the assistant professor is responsible for mentoring and advising students, supporting student-led research initiatives, and providing service to the department, institution, profession, and community.
Duties:
  • Primary teaching duties are in the MA Program in Counseling Psychology (Specialization: Clinical Mental Health Counseling), Department of Psychology. Teach courses in Addiction Counseling and one or more of the following courses:
    Professional Identity and Ethics, Psychopathology over the Lifespan (DSM-5), Group Work and Counseling, Counseling Skills, and Practicum/Internship Supervision, as well as courses within the candidate's area of specialization.
  • Contribute to undergraduate curriculum such as Survey of Psychology, Statistics, or Research Methods.
  • Provide academic advising.
  • Conduct program of scholarly research.
  • Supervise student research.
  • Participate in program, department, university and professional service.
  • Minimum Qualifications:
  • A doctoral degree in Counseling or Clinical Psychology or a closely related area from an accredited university by the time of employment.
  • Licensed or license eligible in the State of Hawaii as a Mental Health Counselor or Psychologist by the time of employment.
