Position Overview
The University of Hawaii at Hilo (UH Hilo) is a public liberal arts and sciences university on the Island of Hawaii, recognized for its integration of cultural immersion and place-based research that leverages the island's extraordinary geological, biological, and cultural diversity. A comprehensive, regional campus within the ten-campus University of Hawaii system, UH Hilo offers high-quality undergraduate and select postgraduate education, with distinctive strengths in areas such as marine science, geology, astronomy, and Hawaiian language revitalization, while advancing research, scholarship, and creative activity that support community needs, environmental stewardship, Indigenous knowledge systems, and workforce development priorities for the State of Hawaii.
Housed in the Department of Psychology, the Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology is designed to provide multicultural, evidence-based student-centered training in counseling psychology with a specialization in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. The program has two optional concentration areas: (1) Addictions Counseling and (2) Research. The mission of the program is to prepare students to help meet the mental health service needs of the diverse and multicultural populations in Hawaii and beyond.
The program is designed to train students to become knowledgeable, skillful, ethical, and reflective mental health counselors, and to serve as a foundation for students interested in pursuing advanced graduate studies.
This tenure-track position is responsible for teaching courses in Addictions Counseling, developing courses in the person's area of expertise, and teaching other undergraduate & graduate courses as needed. Scholarly activities will include conducting research in the person's area of expertise, disseminating the research findings in publication outlets that advances the department's reputation, and actively competing for grants to support one's scholarship.
Beyond teaching and research, the assistant professor is responsible for mentoring and advising students, supporting student-led research initiatives, and providing service to the department, institution, profession, and community.
Duties:
Professional Identity and Ethics, Psychopathology over the Lifespan (DSM-5), Group Work and Counseling, Counseling Skills, and Practicum/Internship Supervision, as well as courses within the candidate's area of specialization.
