Assists in planning and conducting recreational activities as assigned; attends planned training program; and performs other related duties as required.
There is one (1) immediate temporary full-time vacancy not-to-exceed July 31, 2026 with the Department of Parks and Recreation - Recreation Division in Puna.
The eligible list may be used for other permanent and temporary vacancies as they arise during the life of the list. Temporary appointment may lead to conversion to permanent appointment.
Responsibilities- Assists in planning, organizing, implementing, and conducting assigned recreational activities such as teaching sports activities, officiating games, conducting arts and craft classes, and conducting music, dance, and drama activities.
- Attends clinics, workshops, and training sessions.
- Keeps records.
- Assists with special programs and activities.
- Attends meetings.
- Prepares fields and facilities for recreational activities.
- Answers telephone, conveys messages, runs errands, and performs other clerical and custodial tasks.
- Prepares groups for competitive activities.
- Sets up recreation areas for scheduled activities.
- Recruits participants.
- Schedules community use of recreational facilities.
- May supervise part-time or student workers.
A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to:
- Graduation from high school.
- One (1) year of experience in organizing, conducting and/or instructing recreational or group activities.
Possession of a current American Red Cross Standard First Aid Certificate is required prior to completion of probation.
Education SubstitutionAn Associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university in Education, Health, Kinesiology, Physical Education, Recreation, Sports Exercise, or a related field may be substituted for lack of the required experience on a year for year basis (examples: 30 college credits equals one (1) year of experience, an Associate or higher can be substituted for all two (2) years of the required experience).
Scan and attach a copy of your official college transcript to be credited for the substitution of experience.
Foreign transcripts must be accompanied by an official transcript or credential evaluation to determine U.S. equivalency.
Volunteer ExperienceVolunteer experience will be considered provided that it includes organizing, conducting, and/or instructing recreation or group activities. Provide detailed information in Supplemental Question #6 including your total number of volunteer hours.
ExaminationAll applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be assigned a score of 70 points. An education and experience evaluation will be conducted based on the applicant’s training, education and experience as presented in the application.
Knowledge- Application of principles, practices, and techniques of recreational activities, proper care and maintenance of equipment and facilities; principles of group instruction; public relations.
- To stimulate participant interest; instruct and conduct recreational activities; understand and follow oral and written instructions; maintain good working relationships with the staff and public; prepare and maintain records.
