Job Overview
Position:
Distribution System Operator – Non‑Exempt (Hawaiian Electric Company, Hilo – Hawaii Island)
Work Schedule:
Rotating shift schedule (24 hours per day, 365 days per year) with night, holiday, and weekend availability. Overtime is required as needed.
Wage: $64.61 per hour
Key Responsibilities- Respond promptly to power outage events and manage all aspects of outage notification and restoration.
- Operate, monitor, and troubleshoot the distribution and sub‑transmission system using operational technology (OT) systems, SCADA, ADMS, OMS, and other tools.
- Direct field personnel and remote‑controlled operations for single‑phase and three‑phase customer power outages.
- Plan, write, and verify routine and emergency switching procedures, ensuring proper tagging and equipment isolation.
- Maintain accurate logs, work orders, and system status documents; update system models and maps as required.
- Act as the authority for field operations, ensuring reliability of the grid and safety of all personnel.
- Manage emergency response coordination with police, fire, and other agencies during system events.
- Provide real‑time communication to internal stakeholders (operations, customer service, regulatory, media) throughout outage events.
- Support and assist the System Operation Shift Supervisor and other control‑room personnel as required.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Advanced degree, certificate, or completion of an apprenticeship/technician program in a relevant field highly desirable.
- Must pass the SRA Oral & Written Directions Test, PSP System Operator/Dispatcher Test, and Company Job Sample Test.
- Must pass the Company Job Performance Test at the conclusion of each training section.
- Valid State of Hawaii driver’s license and meet the company’s driving standards.
- Ability to distinguish colors, including shades, hues, and tints.
- Must qualify through the established selection process and complete the Distribution System Operator Training Program within the prescribed timeframe.
- Available for rotating shifts, overtime, and emergency duty outside scheduled hours.
