Position: ELECTRICAL ENGINEER IV

Position Information

Help shape and safeguard the Electrical Systems that support Honolulu's communities

The City and County of Honolulu is seeking experienced, licensed electrical engineers to perform complex professional work reviewing and approving electrical designs for the City's infrastructure projects.

What You Will Do
  • Review electrical plans and specifications for design and code compliance
  • Approve or reject plans and specifications requiring professional judgment and interpretation
  • Conduct field and office studies of electrical systems
  • Prepare and review complex contracts and technical specifications
  • Coordinate with engineers, architects, contractors and City staff
Special Work Requirements
  • May be exposed to construction and traffic hazards during site visits
  • May be required to climb ladders, stairs, scaffolding or walk on uneven terrain
  • Must wear personal protective equipment as required
  • Serve as a Disaster Response Worker during civil defense emergency

Minimum Qualification Requirements

At time of application, you must be a citizen, national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non‑citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.

Education Requirement

Equivalent to graduation from a regionally‑accredited four‑year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in an engineering specialty.

Experience Requirement

Three years of non‑registered professional electrical engineering experience.

Applicable Skills Needed
  • Advanced knowledge of electrical engineering principles and complex system design
  • Ability to independently review, analyze, and approve electrical plans and specifications
  • Strong understanding of the National Electrical Code and its application to real‑world projects
  • Skill in evaluating complex electrical systems, identifying issues, and recommending solutions
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical decisions and work collaboratively with diverse teams
LICENSE REQUIREMENT
  • Possession of an appropriate valid driver's license, as required.
  • Possession of a valid license as a professional Electrical Engineer in the State of Hawaii.

NOTE:

Applicants with a current out‑of‑state professional Electrical Engineer license must obtain their Hawaii license prior to appointment.
