Job Overview
The position is a Professional vacancy within the P JW WATER & HAZARDOUS MATERIAL Department of the P ENVIRONMENTAL Division at Hawaiian Electric Company. The role will be filled at either Environmental Scientist or Sr Environmental Scientist level, depending on candidate qualifications.

Environmental Scientist:
Provides technical and regulatory expertise in permitting and compliance requirements for designated area of environmental responsibility, develops and implements environmental compliance training programs for electric utility facilities, and supports planning, permitting, design, construction, and operation of electric utility facilities.
Sr Environmental Scientist:
Responsible for water and hazardous materials programs, provides regulatory and technical expertise, develops, implements, and manages environmental programs, and offers project management and program management in support of environmental compliance and permitting for Hawaiian Electric, Maui Electric, and Hawaiʻi Electric Light.
- Designs and implements environmental compliance programs, reviews regulatory requirements, and provides training to operating personnel.
- Prepares permit applications and testimony on projects requiring environmental approval.
- Coordinates gathering, processing, and validation of environmental data and ensures timely submission of environmental reports to regulatory agencies and customers.
- Prepares requests for proposal for consultant services, evaluates proposals, and manages consultants to ensure timely delivery of quality work products.
- Contributes to preparation or review of environmental assessments and impact statements and coordinates environmental stewardship programs.
- Acts as project manager for assigned projects, leading continuous improvement initiatives.
- Supports continuous improvement goals by participating in projects and studies to improve existing practices, procedures, programs, policies, and training curricula and materials.
Knowledge Requirements
- Thorough knowledge of local, state, and federal laws, regulations, and procedures related to environmental management of electric utility facilities.
- Working knowledge of environmental management principles, environmental technologies, regulations, project management, and program management associated with electric utility facilities.
- Bachelor’s degree in relevant science, public health or engineering discipline; graduate degree preferred.
- Intermediate to advanced computer and software skills (word processing, spreadsheets, presentation, database).
- Working knowledge of company contract management and contract administration policies.
- Working knowledge of continuous improvement principles and tools.
Skills Requirements

- Flexibility in demanding work environment and ability to adapt rapidly.
- Ability to handle sensitive issues with professionalism.
- Strong analytical, investigative and administrative skills.
- Must possess or be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii driver’s license and driving position standards.
- May require specific certifications such as hazardous material spill response training or SCUBA certification.
- Continuous improvement skills and ability to identify improvement opportunities and lead improvement teams.
Experience Requirements
- 3 to 5 years of experience in technical and regulatory matters within environmental responsibility.
Additional knowledge, skills, and experience required for Sr role:
- Professional Engineer (P.E.) license may be required.
- Multiple years (5–7) of experience in technical and regulatory matters.
- Knowledge of water and hazardous materials and related power plant engineering principles.
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, regulations related to water, soil and hazardous materials.
- Computer and software knowledge including GIS.
- Knowledge of Safe Start principles.
- Ability to lead and manage projects and teams.
- Experience with certifications such as hazardous waste operations and emergency response.
