Job FunctionThe P SS POWER QUALITY CUSTOMER SOLUTIONS & SERVICES Department, part of the P CUSTOMER SOLUTIONS Division at Hawaiian Electric Company, seeks a technical resource in power quality, power systems, control systems, commercial electro-technologies, data acquisition, and instrumentation. The role involves preparing site assessments, project proposals, and financial analyses, and acting as project engineer/construction manager for power quality and efficient customer end‑use technologies in the commercial, governmental, and residential sectors.
Responsibilities include researching customer technology applications, planning and implementing solutions, and collaborating closely with key accounts and EPRI resources.
- Consult as a trusted energy partner with major commercial, industrial, and residential customers, resolving power quality issues and implementing efficient end‑use technology solutions.
- Develop, implement, and plan power quality programs and services for commercial and residential customers, including onsite monitoring and educational outreach.
- Co‑develop the Open PQ Dashboard with EPRI and the Grid Power Alliance to enhance grid modernization efforts.
- Conduct field surveys and site inspections, design and install power quality and data acquisition instrumentation systems, and develop appropriate software.
- Advocate and plan the implementation of clean energy and electro‑technologies to reduce customer bills and improve operations.
- Collaborate with internal partners—engineers, account managers, Risk Management, Customer Service, Legal, and Demand Response—to develop new customer technology projects and troubleshoot claims.
- Serve as project engineer and construction manager for research, demonstration, and development of projects with new revenue potential, managing schedules, budgets, and contractor relationships.
- Work closely with System Operations and Engineering to integrate and optimize the role of power quality within the company.
- Research and pursue applications of HVAC&R, lighting, energy storage, power factor correction, voltage dip ride‑through devices, harmonic filtering, transient voltage surge protection, advanced data acquisition, and control systems.
- Stay current on industry trends in power quality, clean energy, and technology that impact customer cost and operations.
- Participate in emergency response activities as required by the company.
- Bachelor of Science or Master of Science in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET‑accredited institution.
- State of Hawaii Professional Engineer (PE) license desirable.
- Detailed knowledge of electrical power systems, renewable generation, energy storage, emergency generators, HVAC&R equipment, control systems, data acquisition, and remote communications.
- Hands‑on experience with direct digital controls (DDC) and HVAC&R equipment.
- Understanding of marketing and project management concepts.
- Proficiency with standard PC software; knowledge of AutoCAD, Visio, Micro Station, or other CAD highly desirable.
- Independent research and creative problem‑solving skills.
- Financial analysis skills, ideally from Engineering Economics or related coursework.
- Valid State of Hawaii driver’s license and ability to meet frequent driving requirements.
- Self‑starter with strong planning, organization, execution, and reporting abilities.
- Effective interpersonal skills, handling difficult issues with tact and discretion.
- Analytical, organizational, planning, and conceptual skills for managing multiple projects.
- Strong oral, written, listening, and platform communication skills across all levels.
- Minimum 7 years of experience in engineering or a related technical field.
