Position: Electrical Engineer I / II - Oahu

This is a Professional Engineer vacancy in the Transmission & Distribution Engineering Department at Hawaiian Electric Company. The position can be filled at either Engineer I or Engineer II (T&D). Applicants should choose the level that best matches their qualifications.

Location: Honolulu – Oahu

Number of Vacancies: 1

Hiring Range: Engineer I – $79,600.00 to $;
Engineer II (T&D) – $99,900.00 to $.

Engineer I

Job Function: Under direct supervision of higher level professional engineers, performs design, project engineering, project management, and general engineering duties in support of capital construction programs.

Essential Functions
  • Prepare plans, layouts, design calculations and related engineering design in accordance with applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations.
  • Conduct project design and cost alternative studies, field inspections, and prepare associated reports.
  • Prepare and manage cost estimates, budgets, schedules, material and construction specifications, and construction contracts for assigned projects.
  • Perform project engineering and project management functions for assigned projects.
  • Coordinate work with consulting engineers, evaluate proposals and bids for engineering services and equipment, and make recommendations.
  • Understand and uphold the Company’s Policies, Mission, Vision, and Values.
  • Participate in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including preparations for such emergencies.
Basic Qualifications Knowledge Requirements
  • BS degree in engineering from an accredited engineering school in a relevant discipline.
  • Thorough knowledge of engineering theories and principles acquired through advanced college level courses or equivalent experience.
  • Knowledge of engineering design, project engineering, project management, and construction methods associated with electric utility facilities, with at least 3 years of relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of personal computer applications such as spreadsheets and word processing. Ability to learn additional software tools.
  • Knowledge of LEAN continuous improvement principles and best practices.
  • Knowledge of Safe Start principles and best practices.
Skills Requirements
  • Good leadership skills and effective written, oral, listening, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and adapt to rapidly changing priorities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to handle confrontational or sensitive issues with professionalism and discretion.
  • Strong analytical and administrative skills for preparing and monitoring project requirements and resolving cost and time constraints.
  • Must be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii driver’s license and meet the standards for driving positions.
Experience Requirements
  • Experience in design and modification of company generation, transmission, substation, and communication/control systems, with specific expertise in a relevant area.
Engineer II (T&D)

Job Function: Performs design, project engineering, project management, and general engineering duties in support of capital construction programs. Plans and conducts work requiring independent judgment, substantial adaptation of standard techniques, and devises new approaches to problems.

Essential Functions
  • Prepare plans, layouts, design calculations, and related engineering designs in accordance with Company standards, codes, ordinances, and regulations. Develop new or improved techniques and procedures.
  • Perform project engineering and project management functions on major capital projects.
  • Work with City/County, State, and Federal agencies on rules, regulations, and permits regarding projects.
  • Conduct engineering studies, prepare reports, and review technical studies prepared by others.
  • Prepare requests for proposal for engineering services, evaluate proposals and make recommendations.
  • Direct design efforts by consultants and check consultant designs.
  • Prepare material and equipment construction specifications for bid, evaluate proposals and make recommendations for purchase.
  • Develop project schedules and cost estimates for inclusion in the capital budget.
