Responsible for the preparation, coordination and monitoring of Maui Electric Power Supply department's annual operating and capital budget, including monthly updates and other financial and statistical reports to management. Ensures proper accounting treatment and recordation of costs. Supports regulatory filings.
System AdministrationProvides company-wide support for the operation, maintenance, enhancement, and control of the budget system software. Assures the integrity of the financial system's database. Provides instruction to system users, coordinates testing, documentation, user training, and helps users interpret information from the system.
Essential Functions- Prepare, coordinate, analyze, and monitor Power Supply's capital and operating budgets and updates; analyze financial and statistical information needs of various users through data obtained from the company's budget system, enterprise system, and other sources.
- Maintain financial system tables and options to ensure database integrity; work with Hawaiian Electric ISD and other system administrators to resolve user issues, test software enhancements, new releases, and upgrades; recommend improvements and document procedures.
- Coordinate annual company planning and budget processing schedule.
- Serve as an expert resource to management by providing financial work papers, exhibits, and supporting documentation for special projects, regulatory proceedings, rate cases, and special investigations.
- Perform financial accounting duties, including maintaining detailed general ledger account reconciliations related to clearing and preliminary engineering accounts in accordance with GAAP, FERC, NARUC, and other accounting requirements; prepare accounting journal entries periodically.
- Ensure compliance with Sarbanes‑Oxley Section 404 requirements.
- Participate in company emergency response activities, as assigned, including preparation for such responses.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Thorough knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, forecasting techniques, cost management and financial/statistical analysis, normally acquired through a Bachelor's degree in Accounting or equivalent experience.
- Knowledge of developing and monitoring operating budgets and forecasts.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Excel, Word, PowerPoint, business diagramming, process modeling, budgeting and forecasting software tools.
- Knowledge of utility accounting, finance, and cost accounting and rate making principles.
- Knowledge of PUC application and reporting requirements.
- Knowledge of SOX 404 application and reporting requirements.
- Knowledge of engineering, project management, and planning of power generating unit addition practices.
- Leadership and interpersonal skills, including excellent written, oral, and presentation skills.
- Financial analysis and problem solving skills.
- In-depth analytical, computational, organizational, conceptual, and administrative skills required for tasks and forecasting.
- Ability to handle difficult or sensitive issues with tact, courtesy, and discretion.
- Willingness and ability to provide training for continuous improvement of employee skills.
- Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and adapt to multiple assignments in rapidly changing priorities.
- Ability to accomplish assignments with minimal direct supervision and produce meaningful presentation of data analysis.
- Ability to lead and provide direction to work teams.
- Multiple (5-7) years of financial analysis and accounting experience performing advanced work in the financial planning field.
- Experience in utility accounting, preparing work papers and exhibits for regulatory agencies is desired.
