Addison Group has partnered with a nationally recognized consulting firm to hire a Senior Consultant with deep expertise in utility taxation, regulatory matters, and cost-of-service analysis. This role is ideal for a professional who excels in complex tax modeling, interpreting regulatory requirements, preparing expert testimony, and advising utilities on tax impacts within cost-of-service and rate proceedings.

Location: 100% Remote

The Senior Consultant will manage and deliver tax-focused regulatory and cost-of-service projects from end to end. This includes analyzing utility tax structures, advising on tax implications for rate outcomes, preparing expert testimony, and supporting client interactions. The Senior Consultant will also mentor junior staff, contribute to proposals and marketing initiatives, and collaborate with senior leadership to support the growth of a high-performing consulting practice.

Key Responsibilities Utility Tax & Regulatory Expertise
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on utility tax matters, including tax normalization, tax repairs, deferred taxes, tax depreciation, and IRS/federal/state tax impacts on rates.
  • Lead and support consulting teams evaluating tax-related issues tied to cost-of-service studies and rate filings.
  • Independently prepare expert testimony addressing tax issues in disputes, regulatory protests, and litigation support for public power, cooperatives, municipals, industrial customers, and state commissions.
  • Explain complex tax and rate making concepts to clients in clear, accessible language.
  • Conduct independent tax and regulatory research to support technical positions, enhance practice knowledge, and train team members.
Cost-of-Service & Rate making Support
  • Analyze tax-related drivers within cost-of-service models, including revenue requirements, tax adjustments, and regulatory precedent.
  • Identify tax impacts that materially influence cost allocation, rate base, and revenue requirement outcomes.
  • Support the preparation of filings, exhibits, and schedules for rate proceedings with a focus on tax components.
Project Leadership & Client Engagement
  • Lead complex projects to effective completion, ensuring timelines, deliverables, and budgets are met.
  • Mentor, train, and supervise junior staff while assisting with performance evaluation processes.
  • Act as a primary client contact and proactively resolve project issues with support from engagement teams.
  • Participate in proposal writing, marketing initiatives, and client-development efforts to generate new work.
  • Represent the practice at industry meetings, conferences, and regulatory hearings.
  • Review draft invoices and assist with project financial oversight.
  • Collaborate with internal departments to increase cross-functional opportunities and optimize resource utilization.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Engineering, Statistics, or a related field with relevant industry experience.
  • CPA preferred but not required.
  • 10+ years of experience with utility taxation, cost-of-service, regulatory accounting, or rate case support.
  • Strong knowledge of federal and state tax frameworks as they apply to regulated utilities (e.g., tax normalization, deferred taxes, repair regulations, tax depreciation).
  • Experience supporting electric utility rate matters; experience with natural gas utilities, cooperatives, or municipals is a plus.
  • Prior experience contributing to expert testimony or preparing technical regulatory filings.
  • Background in audits, tax investigations, or other reviews related to compliance or tax impacts on cost-of-service.
  • Excellent analytical, research, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to simplify complex tax concepts.
  • Willingness to travel domestically (5–10%)
