Legislative Specialist
This recruitment is for a full-time, exempt position in the Office of the County Clerk, Legislative Research Branch (LRB). This position is primarily responsible for assisting the County Council and other County departments with reviewing, revising, and drafting bills, resolutions, amendments, and other legislative documents. This position is exempt from civil service. If you are appointed to this position, your employment will be "at-will", which means that you may be discharged at any time.
Appointment may be made at any rate within the salary range advertised above at which appropriate qualified applicants can be recruited. Starting salary will be based on the qualifications of the person selected.
Edit and proofread legislative documents for editorial, stylistic, and grammatical accuracy and consistency.
Work closely with elected officials and staff to clarify legislative intent, refine language, and support policy development.
Review and proof revisions to the County Code and County Charter for conformity with enacted ordinances and amendments.
Conduct in-depth research on legislative, policy, and administrative topics using a variety of sources.
Perform research and other duties as requested by the County Clerk, Deputy County Clerk, or LRB supervisor.
Minimum Qualification RequirementsPreferred Qualifications:
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in public or business administration, journalism, communications, political science, library science, history, philosophy, economics, or a related field.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex issues to different audiences.
- Strong research and information literacy skills, including the ability to locate, evaluate, and synthesize information from multiple sources.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a professional office environment (experience in government or policy-related settings is desirable but not required).
- Proficiency with standard office software (e.g., Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook) and general office equipment.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, sound judgement, and ability to prioritize and manage multiple assignments.
