Job Description

Coordinates and supports the operational aspects of the Hawai'i Police Department's impaired, unsafe driving, and safety-related activities and programs in an effort to reduce traffic accidents, injuries, and deaths; develops educational and informational materials; trains and supervises school crossing guards; and performs other related duties. There is one (1) immediate permanent full-time vacancy with the Hawai'i Police Department
- Traffic Services Division in Hilo. The eligible list may be used for other permanent and temporary vacancies as they arise during the life of the list. Temporary appointment may lead to conversion to permanent appointment. Special

Available to work flexible hours and have access to insured vehicle for travelling as it relates to program activities.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Training and

Experience:

A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to:

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a baccalaureate degree (scan and attach a copy of your official college transcript to your application), and
  • Two (2) years of work experience in conducting training or educational workshops or facilitating community group activities, and
  • Demonstrated supervisory aptitude*, and
  • Possession of a good driving record certified by a traffic abstract confirming no DUI convictions, license revocations, or suspensions for three (3) years preceding and no moving violations for one (1) year preceding. A current traffic abstract is valid for 30 days from date of issuance by the district court. (You will be required to submit your current traffic abstract at time of the job interview), and
  • Possession of a valid State of Hawai'i driver's license (Class
    3) or any other valid comparable driver's license at time of filing. (You will be required to submit your valid driver's license at time of hire).

Foreign transcripts must be accompanied by an official credential evaluation report to determine U.S. equivalency. (Scan and attach a copy of your official credential evaluation report to your application.)
* Supervisory aptitude is the ability or potential of an individual to perform supervisory duties as demonstrated:

  • By the successful completion of regular assignments that involved some supervisory responsibilities or aspects;
  • By serving as a group or team leader, or in similar work in which opportunities for demonstrating supervisory capabilities exists;
  • By completion of training courses in supervision accompanied by application of supervisory skills in work assignments; or
  • By favorable appraisals by a supervisor indicating the possession of supervisory potential

Examination:
All applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be assigned a score of 70 points. An education and experience evaluation will be conducted based on the applicant's training, education and experience as presented in the application. Please read the minimum qualification requirements carefully. Be certain to list all pertinent training and experience, as this may be important in determining your examination score.

Knowledge of: public relations; principles and practices of supervision; principles of motivation and group dynamics; research methods and techniques; methods for evaluating and analyzing facts, information, and issues to resolve problems; hazards and safety precautions in operating a motor vehicle; grant writing, report and letter writing; and government organizations and functions. Ability to: plan, organize, coordinate, and facilitate group activities, meetings, and training sessions;

assign, review, and supervise the work of subordinate staff; develop educational and training programs and materials; conduct training sessions; summarize data, analyze facts and information, make sound recommendations; communicate effectively orally and in writing; prepare clear and concise reports; establish and maintain good working relationships with personnel from government, community, and private agencies; deal tactfully and effectively with County officials, employees, and the public;

and operate personal computers and various software applications.
