Duties SummaryThe Substance Abuse Specialist III is a member of a multidisciplinary team comprising certified or licensed practitioners, social workers, and other rehabilitative staff. The Specialist:
- Conducts independent assessment, development, and implementation of individualized treatment plans for alcohol and/or substance use users.
- Provides substance abuse counseling and education to individuals and groups.
- Conducts educational, treatment, and therapeutic related classes.
- Participates in the development, evaluation, and modification of program policies, procedures, and treatment approaches.

Prerequisite Knowledge and Abilities
:
Fundamental concepts of pharmacological properties and effects of psychoactive substances; behavioral, psychological, social and health effects; the alcohol and drug use continuum; varying causes of addiction; the relationship between substance use and infectious diseases; and the effects of chronic substance use on individuals and families.
Basic Education/Experience
:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four‑year college or university.
Specialized Experience
: 1.5 years of progressively responsible professional experience involving assessment of individuals and development of individualized treatment plans for alcohol and/or drug use intervention; providing substance abuse counseling and education to individuals and/or groups in an alcohol and/or drug treatment program. Must demonstrate knowledge of goals, objectives, principles, methods, standards, and techniques of substance abuse treatment.
Driver's License
:
Some positions require possession of a valid driver's license at the time of appointment.

Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) Requirement
:
- Has engaged in sexual abuse in a prison, jail, lockup, community confinement facility, juvenile facility or other institution.
- Has been convicted of engaging or attempting to engage in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force, or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable to consent or refuse.
- Has been civilly or administratively adjudicated to have engaged in the activity described in #2 above.
- Has been the subject of substantiated allegations of sexual abuse or sexual harassment or resigned during a pending investigation of alleged sexual abuse or sexual harassment.
