Patient Access Representative | Hilo Benioff Medical Center Admitting Department

• Collect and accurately document patient demographic and insurance information in the EMR system, adhering to policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Obtain required signatures on all pertinent forms and ensure patient identity verification.
  • Discuss payment methods, collect deposits, and issue receipts.

• Verify insurance eligibility and benefits, including coordination of benefits, copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles.
  • Conduct pre-certifications when required and update patient records for billing accuracy.

• Collect patient responsibility payments and generate estimates for scheduled services.
  • Work closely with the billing department to resolve financial or collection issues.

• Process doctor orders to ensure accurate service entries, coordinate bed assignments, and manage patient transfers or discharges.
  • Update the hospital census database to reflect changes in patient status.

• Answer incoming calls and direct them appropriately.
  • Activate emergency communication protocols and facilitate on-call notifications.
  • Use the overhead paging system to communicate critical information.

• Proficiently use Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • Operate standard office equipment such as printers and fax machines.
  • Adapt to changing priorities and support various operational needs.

To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experiences may not be gained concurrently. In addition, qualifying work experience is credited based on a 40‑hour workweek.

High school diploma or equivalent.

Candidates who do not meet the above requirements for experience are eligible for casual hire (non-benefitted) Patient Access Representative I positions.

• General experience: 2 years of general experience required for all levels (Educational Substitution for General

  bachelor’s or associate degree)
• Additional specialized experience required for the II-IV levels, in addition to the general experience listed above. This experience must include performing hospital admission activities (interviewing patients, securing signatures, arranging method of payments for costs not covered by insurance, preparing admitting records)
