Position Overview

The Laotian Video‑Phone Interpreter handles on‑demand calls, translating conversational content between Laotian and English speakers across a variety of industries including healthcare, government, insurance, finance, utilities, travel & hospitality, general business, law enforcement, court, and 911. The role requires quick, concise processing of information on a technical or non‑technical subject while maintaining cultural sensitivity and professionalism. The interpreter does not provide written translation but verbal interpretation.

Job Functions
  • Respond promptly to video and audio interpreting sessions and conduct interpretation in a friendly and professional manner
  • Participate in online, video, and audio training sessions
  • Deliver interpretation services via video and type data on a dedicated device (laptop, desktop computer, mobile phone, or tablet)
  • Render correct concepts and meanings using established interpretation protocol, avoiding omissions or additions
  • Speak clearly in both languages with proper pronunciation, enunciation, and polite expressions
  • Maintain a professional demeanor throughout video and audio interpreting sessions, including calmness during emergency or high‑stress calls such as 911
  • Maintain punctuality and availability during scheduled work hours
  • Follow client instructions and protocol to ensure client expectations are met, including respecting the Limited English–speaking Person (LEP) and client permission
  • Understand and apply industry terminology for medical, insurance, finance, and law contexts
  • Demonstrate commitment to cultural sensitivity and a diverse environment
  • Remain on calls that may be extended without breaks, as the job can involve high call volumes and emotionally or stressful content
Qualifications
  • Fluency in Laotian and English with cultural competency, including assessment of regional and accent differences
  • Excellent listening, retention, and note‑taking skills for high accuracy
  • Ability to concentrate, remain detached, neutral, and objective, even during sensitive subjects such as end‑of‑life conversations, pregnancy termination, vaccinations, or discussions about sexual orientation and/or gender expression
  • Education or work experience in language‑related fields (teaching, language assessment, translation, or interpretation) preferred
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States without future visa sponsorship
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Must be able to read and write the requested languages (highly preferred)
Technical Requirements
  • Dedicating a personal device for business purposes
  • Compatible desktops or laptops with Windows, macOS, or ChromeOS operating systems
  • Compatible tablets (iPadOS or Android); smartphones (iOS or Android) also acceptable
  • High‑speed internet connection with download speeds of at least 5

    Mbps, upload speeds of 3

    Mbps, ping no more than 300ms, and jitter no more than 30ms
  • Access to a quiet space free from background noise or distraction
  • Proficiency with company provided software and systems for interpreting, data entry, and communication
Physical Requirements
  • Operate a keyboard and mouse and remain in a stationary position in front of a computer and webcam for the majority of the workday
  • Use a headset for prolonged periods
  • Operate company software and systems for all job aspects
  • Have sufficient manual dexterity for typing or writing
  • Ability to lift up to 26lbs
  • Exposure to moderate noise levels (computer, audio, telephone)
