Regular, Full‑Time, RCUH Non‑Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Nāpuʻu Natural Resource Management (NNRM) at Puʻu Waʻawaʻa and Puʻu Anahulu, located on the island of Hawaiʻi. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MONTHLY SALARY: $3,927/Mon.
Duties- Lead fence construction and maintenance, and ungulate control actions in management units in the Project Area.
- Check, maintain, and construct conservation fences; conduct native forest restoration and re‑vegetation activities; remove invasive vegetation.
- Trap, bait, and remove ungulates from fenced units; adapt to changing plans and communicate observations and ideas to supervisors.
- Lead a variety of activities associated with the NNRM in the project area, including construction and maintenance of conservation fences, control of non‑native ungulates, maintenance of ungulate traps and game cameras, and data collection.
- Compile technical field data for monthly and grant reporting.
- Drive project vehicles and operate helicopters, as needed, to access field sites.
- Participate in out‑planting, outreach, and weed control activities.
- Maintain databases and analyze data to prepare reports, posters, and/or oral presentations for symposia and conferences.
- Load, unload, aim, and fire air guns from authorized project‑related research or wildlife control programs; disassemble, clean, inspect, and reassemble air guns; maintain air guns and related equipment.
- Work occasional weekends as needed.
Education
High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
Experience
Progression job with minimum experience requirements for Level I, and a combination of experience and demonstrated competence for Levels II and III. An associate’s degree in Terrestrial Biology, Botany, Natural Resource Management, or a related field may substitute for two (2) years of experience. Three to five (3‑5) years of natural resource management experience, including at least one (1) year of fence construction and ungulate control and at least one (1) year of leading a team.
Knowledge
Basic knowledge of invasive plant and animal species in Hawaiʻi, ungulate trapping and dispatch methods, conservation fence construction and maintenance, safe pesticide application techniques, computers (word processing, spreadsheets, databases), and safe use of air guns.
Abilities & Skills
Identify native and non‑native plants in Hawaiʻi; use GPS and smart devices; operate power tools (rock hammer, drill, compressor, generator, weed whackers, chainsaws, mowers); safely apply pesticides; take detailed field notes, collect data, and prepare reports; communicate verbally and in writing; lead field assistants and interns; be well organized, detail‑oriented, and able to work independently; maintain a valid driver’s license and personal vehicle insurance;
drive a 4‑wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission.
Post‑Offer/Employment Conditions
Must possess American Red Cross First Aid/CPR certification (obtainable within three (3) months), complete Wilderness First Aid training within twelve (12) months, complete all IACUC required training within six (6) months, complete basic helicopter safety (A100) and sling load (A219) training within twelve (12) months, complete online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than initial exposure to hazardous chemicals, complete chainsaw training within twelve (12) months, and pass a twelve‑month probationary period with satisfactory performance.
