Responsibilities

The Operating Room Registered Nurse provides comprehensive patient care throughout the perioperative process, ensuring safety and comfort during surgical procedures. Key duties include preparing the operating room, collaborating with the surgical team, and maintaining patient-centered care.

Essential Work Functions
  • Prepare the operating room by ensuring all instruments, equipment, and sterile supplies are ready and functional for each surgical procedure.
  • Assist in positioning and preparing patients for surgery, addressing concerns and ensuring comfort and safety according to procedural requirements.
  • Maintain a sterile field throughout surgical procedures and adhere to infection control protocols and sterile technique.
  • Anticipate the needs of the surgical team, providing instruments, supplies, and support promptly to maintain efficient workflow.
  • Monitor the patient’s condition during surgery, documenting significant changes and notifying the surgeon.
  • Handle surgical instruments and supplies, ensuring their proper use, sterilization, and disposal according to facility protocols.
  • Manage specimen collection, labeling, and transport according to facility protocols, ensuring accurate diagnostic results.
  • Document all aspects of patient care in the perioperative setting accurately and thoroughly.
  • Participate in patient handoff communication during pre‑ and post‑operative phases, ensuring continuity of care.
  • Assist in cleaning and restocking the operating room between cases, adhering to infection control and turnover protocols.
  • Collaborate with the surgical team to ensure compliance with facility policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Follow hospital safety rules and procedures, including proper use of PPE and infection prevention measures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of practice.
Required Qualifications
  • One year of recent experience as an Operating Room RN.
  • Valid RN license in compliance with state regulations.
  • Current BLS certification (AHA/ARC).
Preferred Qualifications
  • ACLS (AHA/ARC), PALS (AHA/ARC) or ENPC certifications.
  • OR Nursing Certification (CNOR).
  • Other certifications and licenses may be required for this position.
Essential Skills
  • Critical thinking, service excellence, and good interpersonal communication skills.
  • The ability to read, write, and communicate in the English language.
  • Ability to read/comprehend written instructions, follow verbal instructions, and proficiency in PC skills.
  • Physical Abilities – Must be able to remain in a stationary position, move about, move equipment (50‑100lbs), push, pull, and bend.
  • Interpersonal Skills – Must be able to work effectively with a variety of personnel (professional and ancillary) to present a positive attitude and professionalism.
  • Technical/Motor Skills – Must have the ability to grasp, perform fine manipulation, push/pull, and move about when assisting with procedures and/or using department equipment.
  • Mental Requirements – Must be able to cope with frequent contact with the general public and customers while meeting deadlines under pressure. Must be able to work under close supervision occasionally, as well as working without assistance from other personnel. Must be able to contend with irregular activity schedules occasionally and continuous concentration to detail.
  • Sensory – Must possess visual acuity and ability to effectively communicate.
