Registered Nurse (RN) Flex Pool (Medical‑Surgical / Step‑Down) Position Overview
We are seeking a flexible and experienced Registered Nurse (RN) to join our Flex Pool team on a contract assignment. This position requires floating between various Medical‑Surgical and Step‑Down units while delivering high‑quality patient care in a dynamic hospital environment. The ideal candidate is adaptable, clinically proficient, and comfortable working with diverse patient populations across multiple units.
Key Responsibilities- Provide direct nursing care to adult patients in Medical‑Surgical and Step‑Down settings.
- Float between assigned nursing units based on patient care and staffing needs.
- Perform comprehensive patient assessments and develop individualized care plans.
- Administer medications, treatments, and therapeutic interventions in accordance with physician orders and nursing standards.
- Monitor patient conditions and promptly communicate changes to the healthcare team.
- Utilize critical thinking and clinical judgment to prioritize patient care.
- Collaborate with physicians, therapists, case managers, and interdisciplinary teams to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation within the electronic medical record (EMR).
- Adhere to infection prevention, patient safety, and regulatory compliance standards.
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) license or ability to obtain required state licensure prior to assignment start.
- Minimum of two (2) years of recent acute care nursing experience.
- Experience in Medical‑Surgical and/or Step‑Down nursing environments.
- Strong assessment, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to adapt quickly to different units and patient populations.
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
- Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC)
- Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC)
- Procedural Sedation Certification
- Night Shift
- 12‑Hour Shifts (6:45 PM – 7:15 AM)
- Scheduled for approximately 36 hours per week following orientation
- Hours are based on facility needs and are not guaranteed
- Holiday coverage required
The RN will be expected to float between multiple patient care units, including:
- Medical‑Surgical Units
- Surgical Acute Care Units
- Cardiovascular/Step‑Down Units (as needed)
Unit assignments may vary based on census and staffing requirements.
Equipment & TechnologyExperience with the following is preferred:
- Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems
- Automated medication dispensing systems (e.g., Pyxis)
- Wound Vacuum‑Assisted Closure (VAC) devices
- Chest Tube Management
Comprehensive orientation will be provided, including unit‑specific training to ensure competency and familiarity with workflows, equipment, and patient care expectations.
Dress Code- Professional nursing attire
- Clean scrubs required
- Contract Position
- 13‑Week Assignment
- Candidates must meet all state licensing requirements before the start of the assignment.
- Documented proof of required immunizations and immunity status is required.
- Medical or religious exemption requests will not be accepted in lieu of required immunity documentation.
- References must be submitted according to assignment requirements.
The ideal candidate is a versatile and dependable RN who thrives in a float pool environment, possesses strong Medical‑Surgical and Step‑Down experience, and can confidently adapt to varying patient care settings while maintaining exceptional standards of nursing practice.
