Position: Golf Course Groundskeeper I - BC-03

Cares for and maintains golf course greens and tees; performs routine manual work in the care of fairways; and performs other related duties as required.

There are three (3) immediate permanent full-time vacancies with the Department of Parks and Recreation at the Hilo Municipal Golf Course.

The eligible list may be used for other permanent and temporary vacancies as they arise during the life of the list. Temporary appointment may lead to conversion to permanent appointment.

Positions vary in work hours and work schedules. Salary will be pro-rated for part-time positions.

Special Working Conditions

6-day work week (Tuesday - Sunday); subject to change according to 12-week work schedule.

Responsibilities
  • Sods greens.
  • Applies top dressing and fertilizer.
  • Removes weeds and repairs holes.
  • Waters and trims greens.
  • Applies insecticides and fungicides.
  • Periodically moves the cup to another location on the green.
  • Keeps tee‑off areas fertilized and trimmed.
  • Adjusts tee markers.
  • Keeps ball washers supplied with soap, water, and towels.
  • Replaces worn brushes in washers.
  • Helps keep fairways trimmed and clear of debris.
  • Operates a light truck in the performance of duties.
Training and Experience

A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to:

  • completion of the eighth grade, and
  • one (1) year of experience in manual labor, and
  • possession of a valid State of Hawai`i driver's license (Class
    3) or any other valid comparable driver's license at time of filing. (You will be required to submit your valid driver's license at the time of hire.)
Examination

All applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be assigned a score of 70 points. An education and experience evaluation will be conducted based on the applicant’s training, education and experience as presented in the application.

In-person interviews and/or further testing in Hawai`i County may be required at the discretion of the hiring department/agency. If in-person interviews and/or further testing are required, applicants who are referred to the hiring department/agency must be available to participate in person and at their own expense at that phase of the selection process.

Knowledge of

the care of golf course greens; equipment and tools used in greens maintenance work; golf as it affects greens maintenance work.

Ability to

operate tools and equipment used in greens keeping work; understand and follow written and oral instructions.

Physical Requirements

Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet the health and physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper for performance of the duties.
