Feeds, waters, and cares for a variety and types of mammals, birds, and reptiles in a zoological park; and performs other related duties as required.

There is one (1) immediate permanent full-time vacancy with the Department of Parks and Recreation - Pana'ewa Rainforest Zoo in Hilo.

The eligible list may be used for other permanent and temporary vacancies as they arise during the life of the list. Temporary appointment may lead to conversion to permanent appointment.

Responsibilities
  • Feeds and waters birds, mammals, and reptiles.
  • Follows established methods of selecting, mixing, and preparing foods.
  • Knows normal behavior patterns of animals and distinguishes and reports symptoms of sickness or unusual behavior in animals.
  • Suggests changes in diets.
  • Cleans pens, enclosures, and cages and assists in the repair and maintenance of such enclosures.
  • Furnishes information to visitors.
  • Assists in cases of escape or other emergencies involving animals.
  • Prepares reports.
  • Use of firearms to euthanize and/or control animals threatening human life.
  • Practices extreme caution in caring for dangerous animals.
  • Enforces safety regulations.
  • Supervises others as assigned.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Training and Experience

A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to:

  • graduation from high school, and
  • one (1) year of work experience in the care of zoo animals (e.g. primates, reptiles, avians, etc.), and
  • must be qualified to carry and/or possess firearm or ammunition in accordance with state and federal laws, e.g., no misdemeanor or felony domestic violence conviction.
License Requirement
  • possession of a valid State of Hawai`i driver's license (Class
    3) or any other valid comparable driver's license at time of filing. (You will be required to submit your valid driver's license at time of hire.)
Examination

All applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be assigned a score of 70 points. An education and experience evaluation will be conducted based on the applicant's training, education and experience as presented in the application.

methods of caring, feeding, and watering a variety of zoo animals; behavior traits of a wide variety of animals and birds; principles and practices of supervision.

Ability to

follow oral and written instructions; keep records; learn and apply safety precautions involved in the exhibition of zoo animals; enforce zoo regulations; detect unusual behavior or condition of animals; deal with the public; plan assignments and review work of others.
