Position: MEASUREMENT STANDARDS INSPECTOR II - KALIHI, OAHU (OHHI)

Job Overview

The Measurement Standards Inspector II works under the Department of Agriculture & Biosecurity to enforce Hawaiʻi’s measurement standards program, ensuring fair commercial transactions, detecting fraud, and promoting consumer confidence.

Salary

$3,900 to $4,933 per month (SR‑13, Step C to I).

Key Responsibilities
  • Enforce the state’s measurement standards program for weights and measures, packaging and labeling, and petroleum products.
  • Apply laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and guidelines related to measurement standards and consumer protection.
  • Assist higher level personnel in inspecting, testing, and calibrating commercial measuring devices and weighing instruments.
  • Conduct laboratory applications and field work, and prepare written reports of activities.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Legal Authorization to Work
    :
    The State of Hawaiʻi requires applicants to be citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens of the United States, or otherwise eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment in the United States.
  • Basic Education / Experience
    :
    Graduation from high school with coursework in basic algebra and English, or one year of work experience that demonstrates the ability to read, comprehend, and apply technical material of average difficulty; to express oneself orally in a clear and direct manner; to perform mathematical processes including ratios, percentages, and solving equations; and to prepare written reports of activities.
  • Specialized Experience
    :
    One year of technical work experience in inspecting and testing weighing and measuring devices, and examining packages for conformance with measurement standards, specifications, tolerances, or other requirements, with knowledge of governing laws, rules, regulations, inspectional procedures, and methods of testing and calibrating measuring devices. At least one year of experience must be comparable in difficulty, scope, and depth to the work of a Measurement Standards Inspector II in state service.

    Relevant substitutions as described in the Minimum Qualification Requirements may apply.
  • Special Requirements
    • A. Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license at the time of appointment.
    • B. Applicants must be able to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds unassisted and up to 75 pounds with assistance or equipment such as hoisting equipment or a hand truck.
Assessment Process
  • Initial review focuses on legal authorization and minimum qualification requirements.
  • Selected candidates will undergo an unassembled examination where scores are based on education and experience.
  • Applicants who meet qualifications may be invited for a department interview and further testing, which may include in‑person interviews in Hawaiʻi.
