The Environmental Health Specialist performs professional work involving the protection and promotion of public health and the environment by ensuring compliance with Federal and State laws, rules and regulations related to the elimination and/or prevention of environmental health, environmental impact, and occupational health hazards. The position receives on‑the‑job training in pertinent Federal and State laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures and research methods;
participates with higher‑level specialists in field activities such as investigations, inspections and sample collection; and performs other related duties as assigned. The role may also require overtime as directed.
- Legal Authorization to work in the United States (citizen, national, or permanent resident).
- Prerequisite Knowledge:
Basic principles and concepts of a chemical, biological or physical science; mathematics (college level algebra); problem‑solving methods; research methods; report writing. - Prerequisite Abilities:
Apply scientific principles, understand and apply environmental/occupational health laws and regulations, conduct investigations and inspections, collect and analyze data, solve problems, perform mathematical calculations, prepare standard reports, and communicate clearly in writing and orally. - Education:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four‑year college or university with a major in chemistry, physics, biology, zoology, environmental science or another closely related field. Coursework must include at least three semester hours in college algebra or higher. - Driver’s License:
Valid driver’s license required for this vacancy. - Lift & Carry:
Ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted. - Substitutions:
