Position Overview
Inspects and tests electrical installations and equipment in buildings and structures of limited size and scope for compliance with plans and specifications, electrical codes and other pertinent ordinances and accepted safety standards, and performs other related duties as required. There is one (1) immediate permanent full‑time vacancy with the Department of Public Works – Building Division in Hilo. This Assistant Electrical Inspector, SR‑16 position is a career ladder position.
The next level in the series is Electrical Inspector, SR‑19, $4,933/month. Persons hired into career ladder positions must meet the minimum qualifications for the next level in the career ladder series, perform work at the higher level, and meet performance requirements to move to the next level in the career ladder series. The eligible list may be used for other permanent and temporary vacancies as they arise during the life of the list.
Temporary appointment may lead to conversion to permanent appointment.
- Review applications for electrical permits, check and verify information recorded on the application with related building permits on file, and verify permit fees according to the established rate schedule.
- Review less complex electrical plans to determine whether proposed wiring and equipment meet code requirements.
- Note appropriate permit fees according to established rates.
- Inspect electrical installations and equipment in existing and new residential and small commercial and industrial buildings for compliance with the provisions of the County electrical codes and ordinances, and with the National Electrical Codes.
- Check type, size, and number of wires, boxes, outlets, and conduits being installed.
- Check load on feeder lines by conducting necessary tests.
- Check wiring of appliances and equipment.
- Issue correction notices, stop work orders, notices of violations, orders, and follow up to ensure violations are corrected.
- Make recommendations to electrical contractors or owners concerning the correct methods of installing electrical wiring or equipment.
- Reject or approve electrical installations and issue certificates of approval when work is approved in its final phases.
- Inspect installation of solar water heater and photovoltaic systems for compliance with County Codes, National Electrical Codes, engineered plans, and specifications.
- Input and check permit status updates in the permitting software system and/or other applications.
- Consult with supervisors as needed in cases of doubt over interpretation of codes or ordinances, or in cases of disagreement with electrical contractors.
- Assist higher level inspectors by inspecting phases of large and complex multi‑storied buildings.
- Keep work records and prepare reports of inspections made.
- Check for compliance with contracting and trade licensing laws.
- Assist with investigation of premises where fires occurred to determine whether fires were due to electrical causes.
- Graduation from high school, and
- Four (4) years of experience in the supervision and/or installation, alteration, repair, and maintenance of electrical equipment, wiring, and apparatus as a journey level electrician, and
- Possession of a State of Hawai‘i Journey‑level or Supervising Electrician's License at time of filing (scan and attach a copy of your license to your application), and
- Possession of a valid State of Hawai‘i driver's license (Class
3) or any other valid comparable driver's license at time of filing.
All applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be assigned a score of 70 points. An education and experience evaluation will be conducted based on the applicant's training, education and experience as presented in the application.
