JOB DESCRIPTION

Position: Tech 2

Reports to: Branch Operations Manager

FLSA Status: Non‑exempt

Division: HPC

Department: Service

Union: ILWU

Location: Hilo

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the general direction of the Service Supervisor, with little or no supervision, the Tech 2 will perform highly skilled work in the repairing, reconditioning, testing, and adjusting of all equipment sold by Hawthorne Cat.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Remove, install, recondition, and repair engines; make necessary adjustments on engines and components such as water pumps, fuel pumps, turbochargers, generators, compressors, coolers, carburetors, and cylinder heads.
  • Perform diagnostic tests on engines for lack of power, hard start, misfiring, overheating, excessive oil consumption, and basic testing of the charging system.
  • Remove, install, and make repairs and necessary adjustments on power‑train components such as torque converters, torque dividers, direct‑drive transmissions, power‑shift transmissions, oil and dry clutches, steering clutches, brakes, final drives, differentials, transfer cases, gear boxes, and undercarriages.
  • Perform diagnostic tests on power‑train components for overheating, operating pressures, and slippage.
  • Remove, install, recondition, repair, and adjust hydraulic components such as cylinders, pumps, valves, and hydraulic attachments.
  • Perform diagnostic tests on hydraulic systems for operating pressures and flow.
  • Meet flat‑rate criteria as established by Caterpillar and industry standards.
  • Contribute to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
  • PC skills.
  • Forklift certified or able to be certified within 60 days.
  • Own hand tools suitable for the required tasks.
  • Preferably at least 5 years of experience.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Walking, moving on uneven terrain.
  • Using hand and power tools.
  • Lifting up to 60 lbs. frequently.
  • Reaching, stooping, and climbing into and out of equipment.
  • Standing, sitting, and lying prone within the shop or on construction sites.
  • Vision, hearing, and talking skills for operating and troubleshooting equipment.
ENVIRONMENTAL
  • Exposure to noise, temperature variations, fumes, and harsh substances.
  • Work outdoors, in shops, and on construction sites.
