Heavy Equipment Mechanic, Diesel Mechanic
What You'll Do
- Diagnose, repair, and overhaul fire apparatus and heavy vehicles, including gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, brake systems, axles, and steering components.
- Maintain and repair electrical and electronic systems such as starters, alternators, sirens, emergency lighting, generators, and multiplex engine and transmission controls.
- Fabricate, weld, and modify vehicle components by repairing body frames, pumps, tanks, and structural parts using machine tools and welding equipment when replacement parts are unavailable.
- Inspect, test, and maintain fire equipment and apparatus, including pumps, piping systems, hoses, and safety systems, and conduct required safety inspections and operational road tests.

QualificationsExperience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to competently perform the journey level skills and duties of this position.
Applicable ExperienceExperience in maintaining/repairing heavy vehicles, or commercial vehicle over 26,000 pounds (GCWR).
Applicable Skills Needed- Knowledge of gasoline and diesel engine systems, including the theory and operation of internal combustion engines and related mechanical components.
- Knowledge of automotive electrical systems and ability to diagnose and repair electrical components and circuits in vehicles and equipment.
- Skill in using mechanical tools and diagnostic equipment, such as hydraulic presses, lathes, gauges, pullers, and other shop machinery used in vehicle repair.
- Ability to diagnose mechanical defects, perform repairs, and follow technical instructions while working safely and handling heavy equipment and materials.
Possession of an appropriate valid driver's license and a current State Department of Transportation medical examination certificate (prior to appointment). The licenses and certificates must be obtained by the time indicated and maintained on a current basis thereafter as a condition of employment.
