Plumber, Building Maintenance, Maintenance Technician / Mechanic, HVAC Tech / Heating Engineer
Performs skilled plumbing work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of water, drainage, and sewer systems and all necessary fittings and accessories in publicly owned buildings and structures; and performs other related duties as required.
There are two (2) immediate vacancies with the Department of Parks and Recreation - Parks Maintenance Division- one permanent full-time vacancy in Hilo.
- one permanent full-time vacancy in Kailua-Kona.
Works with raw sewage - unclogging drains, waste lines, and fixtures.
The eligible list may be used for other permanent and temporary vacancies as they arise during the life of the list. Temporary appointment may lead to conversion to permanent appointment.
- Installs, maintains, and repairs water and sewer systems and accessory fittings in offices, houses, and other structures.
- Installs, maintains, and makes minor repairs to cesspools, irrigation systems, water heaters, pumps, and other units.
- Installs various plumbing fixtures.
- Installs and repairs various types of piping.
- May perform lead caulking and wipes and tests lead joints.
- Cuts, reams, and threads pipe.
- Reads and interprets blueprints, plans, and specifications.
- May assign tasks to other plumbers and supervise the work of helpers or other personnel assigned.
- May perform in other building trades when not performing plumbing work.
- Operates motor vehicle to transport materials, equipment, and employees.
A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to:
- completion of the eighth grade, and
- successful completion of apprenticeship training (scan and attach a copy of your certificate of completion for plumbing apprenticeship to your application), or
- four (4) years of experience in plumbing work under a journey level plumber.
- possession of a valid State of Hawai`i journey worker plumber's license at time of filing (scan and attach a copy of your valid State of Hawai'i journey worker plumber's license to your application), and
- possession of a valid State of Hawai`i driver's license (Class
3) or any other valid comparable motor vehicle license at time of filing. (You will be required to submit your valid driver's license at time of hire).
As applicable to the position, a current Department of Transportation Medical Examiner's Certificate is required, prior to appointment. (The immediate vacancies with the Department of Parks and Recreation do not require a Department of Transportation Medical Examiner's Certificate).
ExaminationAll applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be assigned a score of 70 points. An education and experience evaluation will be conducted based on the applicant's training, education and experience as presented in the application.
Knowledge of:practices, tools, materials, and equipment used in the plumbing trade; operation of plumbing systems and fixtures; laws and rules relating to sanitary plumbing; and occupational hazards and safety practices and procedures.
Ability to:operate various power and hand tools used in the plumbing trade; estimate time and materials necessary to complete a job; read and work from blueprints, plans, specifications, and sketches; follow and give oral and written instructions; and maintain inventory of plumbing materials.
