Mechanical Repairer - BC-

Repairs, overhauls, and maintains a variety of mechanical equipment and tools; and performs other related duties as required.

There is one (1) immediate permanent full-time vacancy with the Department of Environmental Management - Wastewater Division in Hilo.

The eligible list may be used for other permanent and temporary vacancies as they arise during the life of the list. Temporary appointment may lead to conversion to permanent appointment.

Work under filthy and obnoxious working conditions. Must be available for stand‑by duty and be available for immediate response in cases of emergency.

• Services, overhauls, and repairs pumps, generators, power mowers, compressors, welding machines, jack hammers, electric motors, concrete mixers, pipe cutting machines, and other small construction and maintenance equipment.
• Services, overhauls, and repairs small gasoline engines.
• Makes periodic inspections of mechanical equipment.
• Responsible for tools and equipment.
• Keeps records.
• May perform oxyacetylene and electric welding.
• May supervise the work of other mechanical repairers or helpers as required.

Training and

Experience:

A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to:

• completion of the eighth grade, and
• four (4) years of experience in repairing mechanical equipment representative of the class (e.g. pumps, compressors, welding machines, jack hammers, concrete mixers, electric motors, blowers, gear reduction units, gasoline and diesel engines, portable pumps and generators, centrifuges, boilers, and heat exchangers).

License/Certificate Requirements:

• possession of a valid State of Hawai`i Driver License (Class
  3) or any other valid comparable driver license at time of filing. (You will be required to submit your valid driver's license at time of hire.)

Notes:

• possession of valid State of Hawai`i Driver License (Class
  4) or any other valid comparable driver license is required prior to completion of probation, and
• possession of a current Department of Transportation Medical Examiner's Certificate is required prior to appointment.

Examination:
All applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be assigned a score of 70 points. An education and experience evaluation will be conducted based on the applicant's training, education and experience as presented in the application.

In-person interviews and/or further testing in Hawai'i County may be required at the discretion of the hiring department/agency. If in-person interviews and/or further testing are required, applicants who are referred to the hiring department/agency must be available to participate in person and at their own expense at that phase of the selection process.

Knowledge of: practices, tools, equipment, and materials used in repairing mechanical equipment; the functions and operating principles of a wide variety of mechanical equipment, including electric motors and gasoline engines; and hazards and safety precautions applicable to the work.

Ability to: recognize defects in mechanical equipment and take corrective action; use and maintain hand and power tools used in the mechanical trades such as wrenches, soldering irons, cutting and welding equipment, hammers, files, grinders, buffers, and drills; as applicable to specific positions, work under filthy and obnoxious working conditions; and understand and follow oral and written instructions.
