Position: CHILD/ADULT PROTECTIVE SERVICES SPECIALIST - DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN SERVICES - WAILUKU/KAHULUI, MAUI

Recruitment Overview

Recruitment Number 25-0418. Positions in the Maui Adult Protective & Community Services (APCS) program. Salary: $5,588 to $6,797 per month (SR‑23, Step D to I).

Responsibilities

Positions in this class involve critical investigative work to identify and confirm reports of alleged child or dependent adult abuse, neglect, or financial exploitation. Work is frequently crisis‑oriented, confrontational, and may involve challenging family members or other individuals directly in their treatment of children and dependent adults. The Child/Adult Protective Services (C/APS) Specialist often finds themselves in volatile situations, especially on‑site visits where hostility from family members may be high.

Tasks include performing assessments of situations where the danger of imminent harm may require immediately removing children or dependent adults, using police assistance as necessary, and developing primary treatment plans, including termination of parental rights if necessary.

Requirements

Legal Authorization to Work: All persons must be citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens of the United States, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment in the United States.

Basic

Education:

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited four‑year college or university with a minimum of 12 semester credit hours in courses such as counseling, criminal justice, human services, psychology, social work, social welfare, sociology, or other behavioral sciences.

Specialized

Experience:

One and one‑half years of progressively responsible professional experience helping individuals and families identify problems, cope with conditions, and function effectively within their environments.

Protective Services

Experience:

One year of professional social or human services work primarily involving investigations to identify and confirm cases of child or dependent adult abuse or neglect, and developing and implementing primary treatment plans, including termination of parental rights when necessary.

Relevant substitutions as described in the Minimum Qualification Requirements may be considered.
