Job Overview

Working as a Social Worker with the Judiciary offers opportunities to contribute to public welfare and safety. Social workers are employed across various court programs, performing diverse duties that address a broad range of client needs, including substance abuse, mental health, domestic violence, sexual assault, trafficking, child abuse and neglect, trauma, disputed child custody/visitation, and victim restitution.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervision of juvenile law violators, adult law violators, defendants conditionally released from the Hawaii State Hospital, or juvenile status offenders.
  • Conducting child custody/visitation evaluations.
  • Assisting protection order petitioners.
  • Assisting in child welfare services cases referred to the Family Court.
  • Working with juveniles temporarily detained and engaging family and community in juvenile cases.
  • Managing a case load that may include complex social and legal issues such as substance abuse, mental health challenges, domestic violence, and broader community concerns.
Job Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four‑year college or university; at least 12 semester credit hours in social work, social welfare, criminal justice, human services, counseling, psychology, sociology, or related social sciences.
  • Minimum of 2½ years progressively responsible professional social work experience, including assessments, treatment planning, interdisciplinary collaboration, and client progress evaluation.
  • Demonstrated ability to write clear and comprehensive reports, interpret complex written material, and solve complex problems logically and systematically.
Specialized Experience and Substitutions
  • Two and a half years of professional social work experience is required for this level.
  • Substitutions:
    Six months of experience with a bachelor’s degree in Social Work or Criminal Justice qualifies for Social Worker II; one and a half years of experience with a master’s degree qualifies for Social Worker III; two and a half years of experience with a Ph.D. qualifies for Social Worker IV.
Licensing and Compliance
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Compliance with the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) – applicants must not have engaged in or be subject to any of the specified prohibited conduct.
