Primary Purpose

To direct and manage the overall program of instrumental music, provide students with an opportunity to participate in extracurricular band activities, create an atmosphere in the band program that encourages students' continued growth and development, and ensure compliance with all state University interscholastic League (UIL) and district requirements.

Qualifications

Education/Certification:

Bachelor’s Degree, with appropriate state certification in band.

Special Knowledge/Skills
  • Knowledge of overall operations of an instrumental band music program.
  • Ability to manage budgets.
  • Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills, emphasizing healthy teacher/student and teacher/parent relationships.
  • Knowledge of state and UIL policies governing orchestra.
  • Alternatives to the above qualifications as determined appropriate by the administration.
Experience

Three years of teaching and band directing experience preferred.

Major Responsibilities and Duties
  • Maintain UIL quality standards for the top 8th grade performing group.
  • Teach middle school instrument classes with emphasis on proper fundamentals.
  • Direct middle school instrumental performers, including concert band, soloists, and ensembles.
  • Establish performance requirements, enforce academic requirements, and verify each student's eligibility to participate in band.
  • Collaborate with the HS director on a comprehensive cluster recruiting plan.
  • Schedule and direct consistent before and after school sectionals and rehearsals.
  • Create an encouraging and growth-focused band environment.
  • Coordinate band participation at extracurricular events such as concerts, football games, pep rallies, and UIL activities; obtain Director of Fine Arts approval for any limitations on participation.
  • Ensure student participation in TMEA All Region auditions, All City Bands, and solo and ensemble contests.
  • Judge at appropriate district, region, and TMEA events.
  • Implement federal, state, and board policies related to band.
  • Coordinate band parent support group activities.
  • Use evaluative findings, including student achievement data, to assess program effectiveness and guide renewal.
  • Apply and enforce student discipline per the Student Code of Conduct and handbook.
  • Maintain open communication through conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers.
  • Ensure programs are cost‑effective and funds are well managed.
  • Compile budgets, cost estimates, and capital outlay plans.
  • Recommend policies to improve the program.
  • Maintain band policy and procedure booklet for students and parents.
  • Maintain a current inventory of all fixed assets within the department.
  • Oversee cleaning, repair, and storage of all band equipment.
  • Provide team‑teaching at the high school served by the cluster as time allows.
  • Attend cluster staff meetings to facilitate curriculum alignment and teaching method consistency.
  • Collaborate with high school directors to schedule middle school band classes and maximize use of available high school staff.
  • Attend district‑wide band meetings with the Director of Fine Arts.
  • Write reports and communicate effectively in writing.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
