The role you'll contributeSupervises daily functions of the department as directed by the manager and supervisor, the Registered Respiratory Therapist Lead is responsible for administering respiratory therapy care and life support to patients with deficiencies and abnormalities of the cardiopulmonary system under the supervision of a physician, by prescription, and in accordance with established policies, applicable state laws, and current applicable federal, state, and local standards, regulations, and guidelines.
This position ensures the highest degree of quality care is rendered at all times by coordinating and supervising all aspects of respiratory therapy. Responsibilities include providing respiratory care services in accordance with specific physician's orders, department policies, and procedures, assisting with daily operations, assignments, schedules, attending to the needs of the department and patients, and performing pulmonary function testing (PFTs).
The Lead is also tasked with staffing and scheduling team members to ensure adequate coverage, developing strong relationships with physicians and other referral sources, ensuring compliance with established pulmonary programs, maintaining open communications to meet patient, staff, and facility needs, and maintaining clinical competence through regular practice. This role includes direct patient care, assisting physicians with bronchoscopies, patient transports, monitoring staff documentation, staff development, improvement of clinical skills, and serving as a department safety officer.
The expectation is to act as an Ambassador to patients and families for better outcomes and satisfaction, oversee revenue cycle and charges, lead process improvement, and maintain competency in utilizing and troubleshooting ABG machines. Additionally, responsible for new employee and yearly education competencies, assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating the treatment, care, and needs of patients, making staffing assignments, adhering to compliance plans and regulations, participating in outstanding customer service, and maintaining respectful relationships.
Collaborates with other disciplines for effective care delivery and desired outcomes, acknowledges patient's age and cultural diversity in care provision, and serves in a mentoring capacity for therapy staff, overseeing day-to-day operations including clinical competencies, staff development, performance evaluations, and regulatory compliance. Supports the organization's vision and mission and practices performance improvement techniques to assure effective patient care.
- Acknowledges daily staffing needs and changes on a shift by shift basis using spreadsheet.
- Fills shifts as directed by manager.
- Delegates shift assignments to other therapists.
- Ensures pagers are working and distributed to all therapists.
- Assigns and keeps track of lunch schedule and ensures that all staff use time clocks on their lunch break.
- Assigns and keeps track of WOWs.
- Notifies hospital operator of therapist assignments and pager numbers at the beginning of every shift.
- Places a copy of daily assignments in the proper journal.
- Prints an end of shift report to assure there are no open orders. If there are any open orders, he/she notifies the therapist responsible to complete them before leaving.
- Keeps track of BiPAPs and EKG machines and gives status report to next shift.
- Ensures that Pediatric EKGs have been sent for over read and keeps track of documents.
- Performs designated role in department CQI process.
- Acts as a Super User when new computer modules are introduced.
- Takes call as deemed necessary by supervisor or manager.
- Demonstrates respiratory care procedures to students and other health care workers.
- Acts as preceptor for students and new hires for orientation.
- Attends the majority of department meetings and department in-services.
- Other duties as assigned.
