Substitute Teacher

Seeking Substitute Teachers for the School City of Hobart. Positions are filled on an as‑needed basis.

Position Summary

To support continuity of instruction and student supervision in the absence of the regular classroom teacher. The Substitute Teacher follows teacher‑provided plans, maintains a safe and orderly learning environment, supervises students, and communicates appropriately with school staff.

Key Responsibilities
  • Follow lesson plans, schedules, routines, and directions provided by the regular teacher and/or school administration.
  • Maintain a safe, orderly, respectful, and supportive classroom environment and supervise students throughout the assignment.
  • Implement assigned instructional activities, monitor student work, and provide assistance appropriate to the assignment.
  • Take attendance, follow building procedures, and leave clear notes regarding work completed, student behavior, and significant concerns.
  • Communicate promptly with school staff regarding questions, emergencies, student welfare issues, or situations requiring administrative support.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by an administrator.
Qualifications

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required to perform the essential functions of the position.

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Valid Indiana Substitute Teacher Permit or Indiana teaching license.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor and interact effectively with students, staff, parents, and the public.
  • Ability to adapt to different grade levels, subject areas, classroom routines, and school settings.
Preferred
  • Prior substitute teaching, classroom support, youth supervision, or comparable experience.
Terms of Employment

This position is scheduled on an as‑needed and as‑available basis.

FLSA Status

Exempt

Pay Rates
  • Licensed Indiana Teacher - $105.00 per day.
  • Substitute Permit with Bachelor's degree or higher - $95.00 per day.
  • Substitute Permit with High School diploma - $85.00 per day.
  • This substitute position is not eligible for retirement or health insurance benefits.
Physical Demands

This position requires the ability to stand, walk, sit, talk, hear, supervise students, respond to classroom activity, move throughout school areas, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Work is performed primarily indoors in a school setting and requires frequent interaction with students, staff, parents, and visitors. The position may involve movement through classrooms, hallways, cafeterias, playgrounds, media centers, and other school areas that can be noisy and heavily occupied.
