Substitute Bus Aide

School City of Hobart is seeking substitute bus aides. Positions are filled on an as-needed basis. The role involves assisting the bus driver in transporting students to and from school and related activities. Key responsibilities include working with the bus driver to ensure safe and timely transportation, assisting with student loading and unloading, monitoring student behavior, and supporting bus safety drills.

The position requires standing, walking, sitting, bending, kneeling, crouching, climbing steps, and maintaining balance while riding in and moving within a school bus. The employee must also assist students with safety restraints, seating, and mobility, including helping support, stabilize, or reposition students as needed using proper body mechanics and available equipment. Typical lifting and carrying requirements are up to 25 pounds constantly, up to 50 pounds occasionally to frequently, and up to 75 pounds as a team lift, as required for student safety and transport.

Minimum requirements include a high school diploma or GED, being at least 18 years old, and the ability to communicate clearly and professionally with students, parents, and staff. Preferred experience includes working with children and supporting student transportation, student supervision, or special needs/mobility assistance.

Salary and benefits are defined in the School City of Hobart Transportation Department Staff Handbook. This substitute position is not eligible for retirement or health insurance benefits.
